Progress...yay!

Postby britmon » Sat Dec 06, 2014 9:27 pm

Little Espresso my :gray: came to us a month ago underweight, scared, atrophied, and with a HORRIBLE diet. She had an unhealthy bond to her only toy due to lack of attention and chewed her nails to the point of bleeding. In only a month she has totally blossomed! She is still a picky grey but now she eats WAY more healthy things than eggs and seeds (her diet when she was surrendered). We tried acorn squash for the first time today and she gobbled it down like it was the tastiest thing in the world LOL; she is gaining weight steadily and climbing all over. She puts her head down for exactly 2 seconds of scratches and today she stepped up for the first time (it was off of the floor so I cheated a little...but she did came to me so I count it)!!!! Her favorite toy is a box filled with toys and goodies and her favorite treat (which used to be crackers) is now plain popcorn with chili powder and she politely beeps to try anything off of my plate . Every day she is getting better and better and just fills my life with joy!

You are blessed. It is like taking in an orphan and changing it's life.
She sounds like my Myrtle. She came to me skinny and on a seed diet. She eats everything but when she wants something off my plate she says "Myrtle" in a little voice like begging.

Oh, what wonderful, wonderful news! But, please, take her to the vet because after ten years of such a terrible diet (super high protein), she has to have high uric acid and, if nothing else, the beginnings of fatty liver disease.

I have never considered myself "blessed" before letting parrots into my life; they are so loving and wonderful. I am so glad we found eachother.

Yes we are making a trip to the vet very very soon. Does anyone have any experience with Dr. Nemetz in California? I have her on a pretty low-protein diet currently to combat any possible diet-related issues she might have currently but there is no way to know for sure until the vet visit.

Low protein is good but you also have to treat with supplements for high uric acid and fatty liver so the sooner you take her to the vet, the better. And ask him to do a bile acid test because that's the only way of knowing how the liver is doing for sure. And, in case she has high uric acid and he wants to give allopurinol, please do research on it because it affects the liver so, with parrots, it's much better to go the holistic way to reduce it (and, from personal experience, it works like a charm so there is really no need for the medication).
