Pretty Boy

Postby Pajarita » Wed Dec 31, 2014 1:07 pm

I wasn't here yesterday because we drove to Connecticut to pick up a sun conure which needed a place to stay while his owner is in the hospital and in rehab.

This is Pretty Boy, a 3 year old Sun conure thought to be a male. He is now in my house and got his first gloop this morning (he also got romaine, orange and green pepper but he did not try any of them). He was on those terrible fruity pellets with millet and dried fruit bits (with sulfites!) as treats but he will be switched to a good diet (I already told them that my 'fee' for boarding him is their promise that his diet and environmental conditions will change). Cage is adequate but the perches gotta go (dowels!) plus the stand was put together with the top upside down so the cage is literally loose on it (I am taking it apart and putting it back together tomorrow as well as giving it a good cleaning and putting new chewies and branches for perches).

I opened his cage this morning but he did not want to come out -which is fine. He is supposed to bite everybody but his owner and doesn't even know step up from step down but that's OK, we will work on him once he gets used to me. I assume that even though he is in an unfamiliar place with strange people, being here is a relief to him because he has been in his cage, all alone in the house, for almost a month now (the son in law was going every other day to put fresh water and pellets in his dish), the poor thing!

Will tell you how he progresses as the days go by.

Pretty thing, isn't he?

What a lovely bird! Sun conures are not my cup of tea (the one I've met has vocalizations that give me headaches), but they really are among some of the loveliest birds! The sort that I personally prefer to admire from a distance :D . Do keep us updated on his progress please!

He is doing very well. He would not come out of his cage but he did this morning. Just for a few minutes, with great trepidation and only to perch on the little door that opens up on top of his cage (where he is on the picture I posted). He was very nervous and anxious and danced and danced all the time he was on it but I just danced with him and sang "Good boy, good boy, PREE, PREE" (the PREE is my imitation of his vocalization) along with him keeping his rhythm and all the time he kept his eyes on me so I think he liked it.

He hasn't touched any of the raw produce but he started eating the fresh corn in the gloop two days ago and, this morning, I saw him eating the hominy so he is on his way to a better diet (I only gave him the fruity pellets he is used to the first day, it was gloop, produce and seeds after that).

But the best news is that, this morning, for the first time since he came, Zoey did NOT fly to his cage to bother him.

Wow thats great progress, I wish mine were so brave. It took months just for her to come out of her cage.

It depends on the care they have known in the past, Sasha. This bird has been well loved and has no reason to suspect humans can be cruel, he simply distrusts us because we are strangers. He might not have had a good diet, light, schedule, etc but it wasn't because the owner did not care, it was because he did not know any better.
