Two new flock members- Ringneck and Quaker

Postby shiraartain » Sat Jan 03, 2015 6:38 pm

Essentially, we received a Quaker and a Ringneck through an acquaintance of my father's who had then for about 1.5 months. We received their toys, travel and living cages, food and will be receiving their gym soon as well. These two are my dream birds that I intended to adopt at some point later on life, but the world works in mysterious ways. The two arrived this afternoon, and are quite relaxed. They seem to be bonded, as they were preening one another and cuddling together. The ringneck shows signs of aggression towards hands while the Quaker seems to be afraid of hands. They were fine with us sitting next to their cage and talking and proceeded to preen themselves and move around. The 90 day quarantine begins now, though I plan to move Fajr to a different floor come tomorrow as he caught a glimpse of them and his curiosity was piqued.

The pair's diet is severely lacking and I will begin transitioning them this week. I plan to post on a separate thread about that tomorrow.

According to the previous owner, the quaker has mated and is due to lay an egg, but considering the bird's diet and the number of dangerous "toys" which were in the cage, I'm not sure that this information is the most reliable. The birds were chewing on a pair of headphones when they arrived! :o :(

The quaker has mated and is due to lay an egg? Mated with whom and how does he know she is due to lay an egg? Birds don't lay eggs every time they copulate and, if she had a mate, where is it and why was she separated from him? I doubt this information is correct because, if she has lost her mate, she would not be allopreening with the IRN and, besides, she would have laid it by now.

Be very careful with the quaker and your GCC, these little guys are fearless and VERY jealous so you might have trouble (quakers can be very aggressive to other birds).

Thank you Wolf!

Parjarita, the only time these birds will be allowed together is under supervision. Just the difference in the size makes me nervous. Owner-wise, these birds belong to my Dad, and he has designated a twin to each bird. (Partly so that they can take care of feeding and cleaning of the birds/cage and partly because they're both upset over Fajr not liking them.) So they will be spending the bulk of their time with my Dad and the twins anyways, unless they form a strong bond with Fajr.

Thank you for the information regarding the egg-laying Parjarita! I was quite concerned about that as I am not exactly enthusiastic about having a chick on our hands. I don't know why she was separated from her mate. I asked my Dad, but he was vague about it so I don't think he knows either.

Don't worry about it, I think it was misinformation on the previous owner's part because if she was going to lay an egg, she would have done it already.

hi guys!

i own the quaker that shiraartain is talking about and i have (thankfully) made a lot of progress with her (we assume she is a girl) her name (i have finally decided) is Clover. Now and then she talks and makes a happy sound when i come to her. she only does it once a day. she is a green quaker and very adorable. so far our IRN and quaker are the best of friends. a few arguments now and then but otherwise they are doing very well. she also steps up but its always for a treat. sometimes she flies a short distance to fly to my arm or shoulder because she cant fly far because her wings were clipped too much. i'm pretty much a first timer in owning a bird myself ( the training part) so i would really appreciate tips on training her to step up not for a treat thnx!!!

Hi and welcome to the forum. I understand that you have been working with Clover for a while now, so I am a little bit surprised to learn that she is not stepping up for you without a treat. This is not a bad thing it just surprises me. Does she climb up on you when she is out and placed near you, without a treat? You know, times when you are reading or listening to music and she just walks onto your hand or arm or even your leg? My birds do this all the time without my asking them to and if yours does this then all you need to do is to say step up every time that she does this on her own and very soon she will figure it out and do it when you ask her to without any treat at all. She might like a head scratch as a reward instead of a treat. Another way is to ask her to step up two times before giving her the treat but give her praise and a head scratch when she does it the first time. Then you progress to three times with praise and head scratches and treat on the third time. The final step is to ask for her to step up three times but vary when you give her the treat and give praise and head scratches the other two times. I hope that this will be helpful for you.
