Update on Kiwi/ George

Postby debdans » Sun Mar 01, 2015 5:33 am

Kiwi/George some bad news but first the good.I did as you all recommended and stopped forcing him .after a week he calmed down a little enough to accept carrot are peanut and not not attacking And talkingA lot .keep saying Hello George So I said that back and he lit unhappy bouncing up and down.I called husband Dan later who said that name same reaction. So I thank man lied about age also.He was not first and only owner and some were he was George.I went in one morning and he was laying on side in cage could not stand are move right foot.Took him to vet he had a stroke. Was put on2 meds for inflammation of the brain. But vet said bad chance he would recover.I spoon fed him baby formula from Petsmart first week.he was then able to stand on one foot.started 2 days later trying to climb cage and fall off.So moved to 18" dog crate. The up side he hated being touched. But no biting.Over next week he started trying to perch on a tree branch 6"up. Once he was able to grip with right foot back. To big new cage I ordered day before stroke. He is know able to climb with right foot and beak then perch with both feet .To this day can not move right leg.But he has come so far.But no words just garbled super low squeeze.Last Wed I was Chang papers and said Dan come help me.George got out a low volume but good WHAT.I almost cried I was so happy. He is saying 2-3 worries know a little soured and still low.But words we can understand I am crippled on right leg just like him.I fell this morning broke other leg .at hospital and Dan said Geroge has been calling all evening looking for me saying day da day da I presume for Deb.So I have hope.vet told me feed him any thing he will eat till better. Seeds of course.in last two weeks has nibbled the pellets you said are bird candy..also funny he gets mad and turns his back to you and peeks over a shoulder at me.deb

That is wonderful. It makes me so happy to hear that your baby is going to come through.
Turning his back is using body language on you. Maybe he did not have the words he wanted at the time.
He used WHAT in context so we know his brain has not suffered.
If he will let you, help him exercise his other leg. If it is not used it will deteriorate the musles and make it harder for the nerves to heal back.
This trauma may open the door to vocabulary and actions that he was hiding from you.

Thank you so much for letting us know how things are going. It was thoughtful of you to share with us. And poor baby! Thankfully, he is getting better but, my dear, if he is already perching, you can start (very slowly and very gradually) switching him to a better diet because I am sure the bad one he has had all his life is what caused the stroke in the first place. Have you tried to make him some gloop? All my birds like it but amazons are real easy to switch because they are such natural good eaters.

Sorry to hear about your leg, too! Lordy, you've been having a real bad time of it, aren't you? Keep your spirits up, spring is right around the corner and we all feel better when everything starts growing!
