Cooking with a bird flying about or perched on you or just free in the same room as you are cooking in is very dangerous and I would not do it ever.

Yes, I new someone who's bird died because it landed in the boiling pasta water. When I first heard this I truly almost fainted. But if it gets someones attention, and makes you remember to remove birds from the kitchen, then its worth repeating

Kitchens and bathrooms are two of the most dangerous places for a bird to be. The bathroom because of the toilet often being open so that the bird can fall in and drown or bars of soap left where they can nibble on them. I am sure that you can think of other toxic substances in the bathroom that are usually out to entice a bird. The kitchen normally not only has containers of often scalding liquids, there are hot surfaces, sharp items, cup and glasses with small amounts of interesting liquids. These are just a few of the dangers to a bird.

Myrtle can be a real pain when I am trying to do something. She is a fast learner. When the tip of her wing touched the ceiling fan she just started flying under them. One time stuck on a fly strip and she no longer goes near them. When I am cooking she has to get involved. Especially when it is something she wants a share of. She start on my shoulder then hangs down my front to get closer to it but she knows what a stove does and stays far enough away to stay out of the heat.
The middle of the stove is the only safe place for a bunch of bananas. She only gets near the stove when she is hanging on me.
Many years ago my aunt's cageless budgie flew into a hot skillet filled with oil. He did not survive.

I just won't chance it so my birds are kept out of the kitchen when it is in use and until everything has cooled off.

I also would not risk their getting hurt or more based on training on their knowing where to go and where not to go. When birds panic, they don't think, they just react so, as far as I am concerned, there will be no cooking ANYTHING (not even in the microwave) with a bird loose.

well actually the cooking thing is only with fajr and every time my mom either puts him in his cage, puts him in a room upstairs or calls one of us to get him. that or she puts him in his favorite spot. on the kitchen window curtain rod. after anyone does one of those things he usually doesnt bother them anymore.( he also likes the top of the fridge)

also fajr knows how to open his cage. a tip for a bird who knows how to open his cage use a clothes pin to close their door. they also work as toys. once i stuck one up right in the bed sheet and wiggled it. he pounced on it and chewed on it and when he got it out he rolled over onto his back with it. he knew they were harmless and had so much fun with it. ( we only buy them for the birds.. otherwise we dont use them. also they're wooden and not plastic)
