bird carrier

Postby Lori » Sat Jul 18, 2015 9:19 am

Hi
Today Scooter is getting another carrier, we are getting it from someone I don't know, the owner said its brand new and unused. So i'm guessing that maybe her bird was in it once or twice and then they didn't use it anymore. OK this is probably going to sound stupid, do I like spray it with lysol? or something before we use it, its fabric so its not washable

I wouldn't use a fabric carrier for any bird let alone a 'too if that's the bird your wanting to use it for. The risk of escape is too big imo.

Hi
no no, its a great carrier its one of those PakOBird carriers. I bought one quite some time ago, and yes she chewed this 200 dollar carrier up pretty good by our 3 time in it! but I was able to reinforce it and make it work! I just gotta keep ahead of my chewer! This one I just got is bigger and she is pretty use to it now, but I will add a few reinforcements to it BEFORE she gets in it this time, just cause I know what shes going to do now ;)
The lady I got it from said her Mother Never even used it, she put her bird in it ONCE and it hated it and she never tried again..

Just give it a wipe-down with diluted vinegar and maybe leave it outside in the sun for a couple days to sun bleach. Lysol is really bad for birds, especially the fumes.

No, Lysol is not bad for birds. As a matter of fact, the USDA gives two different 'recipes' for their contagious disease disinfecting protocol, one is 10% Lysol (very expensive if you have a lot of birds because it's the Lysol straight out of the bottle) and the other is the Clorox-based one I use (1% Clorox). Vinegar, although a good cleaner, doesn't kill anything that would really need to be killed.

I don't use cloth anything with my birds. I use an aluminum carrier like this one: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=alu ... ajaxhist=0

And I highly recommend it to everybody because, it's strong, light, easy to carry/clean and I've had it for years and years and it still looks brand new! And they have bigger sizes.

Good to know, Pajarita, thanks! I was thinking along the lines of Lysol giving off fumes that might be harmful? I imagine using it away from the birds and letting the carrier air out thoroughly would be fine.

Yes, Saerphe, that would do just fine. I don't use Lysol because with all the cages, walls and floors I have to wash, it would be incredibly expensive but, according to the USDA's epizootiologist (expert in animal epidemics), it's over 99% effective.
