The difference between two months

Postby Roonil Wazlib » Tue Jul 21, 2015 5:55 am

So I've had my baby since April. This photo was taken a couple of weeks after adopting him, and the second one, just today. I am simply amazed at the difference, and feel, especially as a 'first time' (not counting my budgie i had in school, as my parents looked after him) mum, so proud of myself, and so rejoiced that i know his life has been made better.

he gets regular showers now - smelt like old, stale musky dirt before, now its peanuts
as he's an eckkie, his diet is fresh fruit and veg (i don't do any gloop, nor pellets). and some seed. and nuts and sunflower seeds for treats. His breast bone isn't sticking out so prominently anymore, and hes plumped up a bit.

We go for walks together, been working on the harness and going outside for a while, and the last two weeks we've been going out on the same path and hes been getting more and more confidant each time.

we also go to my parents once a week, so hes getting interaction with more then just our household of two humans and two cats :)

I'll admit, i don't set up as much forging situations as I'd like, but hes got a couple of toys to forage with, which he loves (he didn't have any foraging toys before i took him in)

The only thing i'm not doing well, is keeping his nails in check :/ they are long mofos - if anyone has a recommendation/link for a good perch that will help his nails, please link it, because i need it in my life.

anyway, just thought it was time to update/brag :P about my boy. Im super happy

WOW what a difference. You have done excellent care.

I have been taking mine to the vet for a trim. I lost track of the gadget that Myrtle will let me use on her nails.

Depending on the trust, you can use a rough emery board to take a few swipes each day. Myrtle only allows one toe at a time so it takes all day to do hers.

If a cockatiel has a pointy nail that needs help use a fine emery board.

Thankyou :)

I got a quote for $25 for a trim at my vets, so if I can't find anything to help soon, i'll be booking him in. I do have a cat nail trimmer, but I'm a bit worried to be using it on him as its as big as him  a emery board is a great idea, i'll have to get a few for him to play with, i'm sure he's consider swiping his claws a few times simple play - at least then they won't be as pointy. Thanks liz

I try to keep one of these in each of my birds cages at all times or one similar to it as well as some natural wood branches wit bark on. and unless there is a need for trimming such as caused by liver disease I don't trim nails on my birds. http://www.windycityparrot.com/8-14-in- ... p_949.html

Yeah, I don't trim my healthy birds nails, either. I used to do the cockatoo's because, as he can't fly, he grabs your hand real hard with those big toes and long nails of him but I haven't done it in quite a while now. I suggest sweetfeet perches. Perfectly safe for their feet and very effective if one uses them as their roosting perch.

And, yes, HUGE difference! Good job!
