It's not so much looking at them with one eye but turning your head a bit sideways and looking out of the corner of your eyes.

Yes, that is what I meant. I see my comment may indicate that I might mean close one eye... 
After I typed it and signed off to tell Doug, He, too, got the look on his face of an epiphany and exclaimed 'Of course, that makes sense! '
We have been together 3 years. Before that he never considered having a bird as a pet, but very quickly became drawn to their fascinating ways.

20 years ago I never thought of having a bond with a bird. They amaze me every day.

Same here! I've had parrots for 23 years now and there hasn't been a single day that I have not found something to be amazed at!
