The biggest mistake of my life

Postby konceppt » Mon Jul 27, 2015 12:30 pm

Hi all,

It has been some time since i posted on the forum. I made a HUGE HUGE mistake a couple of years back and sold my senegal parrot "Juno"
My wife was 8 months pregnant and i told myself that the reason i was selling her was down to not having the time for her when my daughter was born. In some respects this was true but if i am honest to myself, her screaming was getting hard to live with and that played a large part in my decision. In the last year that decision has been eating me up inside and i hate myself for what i did. I recently tried to contact the guy i sold her to but all i have is his phone number. I tried calling and sent various messages all to no avail. He has not responded at all. I told him on the day that he took her that i was upset abut it and that if he ever decided to sell her he should contact me first and i would give him his money back and take her back. I assumed since that call never came, he had kept her which made me happy. So by chance i googled his phone number to see if i could find any more contact details for him......and i found an advert on birdtrader for my senegal posted less than a month after i sold her to him. I was gutted and quite upset that he didnt call me first as i had asked, He had also advertised her at least double the price i had sold her to him for. Clearly why he didnt call me first.

Now i guess i cant judge the guy for what he has done since i sold her myself but for very different reasons. I was her first owner, she was only a year old when i sold her. I was attached to her and clearly he wasnt. I have just started thinking about getting another parrot and i swear to myself that i will NEVER EVER repeat that mistake. It is destroying me right now that i sold her and it keeps me awake at night. This post isnt going anywhere other than for me to get my story out there and maybe teach others to persevere with behavioral problems and do not make the mistake that i made. I promise you, one day you will hate yourself for it

With that being said, i cannot bring myself to get another senegal as it would be a constant reminder of what i did. Can anyone else recommend a different species that may have similar traits to the senegal in terms of behaviour, husbanddry, diet and temperament etc?

I promise that this time i am going in with my eyes wide open and this parrot will be forever

Thanks for sharing.

May I just recommened that if you get another parrot for any reason, that it be a rescue. You cant undo what is done but you may be able to help another.

I did think exactly that, To try and make amends for my mistake. My eyes are open this time round and I like the idea of a rescue bird. I can't get my bird back but I can turn another birds life around and give it a home and the attention that it needs
Thanks for that

There is rally nothing to make amends for, You did what you thought was best at the time that you did it. We always fall short when we judge our actions from yesterday based on todays knowledge instead of the knowledge that we possessed yesterday. Not to mention that we have all made mistakes concerning our birds and for some of them it cost their lives either directly or indirectly.
There are more birds in rescues than the rescues can handle, so it is a good place to find a bird that wants to be with you. Just don't go and get a bird because you feel guilty about what happened in the past, that is a recipe for failure. If you are going to get a bird do it because you care about the bird and because you want the bird.

Konceppt, kick yourself around one last time then move on. It is in the past and cannot correct it. I got Rambo from a woman who did the same as you. Put on your "rose colored glasses" and believe that your baby found a home like mine.

Now look for one who needs you. There are so many out there in need of rescue.

You had the bad luck of dealing with a bird flipper. People don't realize how many people do this, they get an animal cheap off CL or some other venue just to turn around and sell it for more. It's another example of the terrible things apparently 'nice' people do to the poor defenseless animals. There was a lady in Pennsylvania, where I used to live, that actually advertised herself as a rescue...

See if you can get another poi from a rescue but, if I were you, I would wait until my daughter is older because the combination of babies and parrots don't usually work out well...

I know a girl who had to give her birds away twice. The first time, she got them back when the person contacted her as she had asked them to if they could no longer keep them...and had to give them away again. (It was a pair of cockatiels and she develops severe breathing problems around them). The second time, the person didn't contact her and she happened to see the ad online. They're back with her again.

I also had to give away my tiel and keet who were bonded to each other and extremely delightful darlings due to my sisters allergies to bird dander...gave them to a family that took in birds, and they ended up losing both of them (one flew away and the other died) and not bothering to tell me.

We all make decisions we think are informed and best at the time, but we can't control the actions of other people or circumstances. I agree that volunteering and adoption are the best route. Best of luck, do keep us updated!

Im not trying to be rude or anything but why would u give your birds away just because your sister was allergic you could have just kept them away from her I wouldnt give away my birds for anyone. If I had to live in a apartment that dosent allow pets I would rather live in a car where I can keep my birds.Theres always a choice you dont have to do something u dont want to and im sure you werent forced to give them away.
