I don't care if they talk

Postby Kakariki » Sat Aug 08, 2015 1:02 pm

My ringnecks, Raj and Kaleesi, were a breeding pair before I got them. I was wondering if anyone thinks they may still be able to learn to talk? It really does not matter if they do or don't I just want them to be happy, but it just occurred to me that it would be interesting if they , or either of them, did. Just a thought. I do talk to them often, as I do to all the birds. I now am nly able to work 3 hours a day, 3 days a week so I am home ALOT! My spouse, my dog Boris and my birds are my greatest companions.

It is always better to not expect them to talk, but then you never know. They are capable of learning to talk from a pretty young age and what that age is does seem to vary somewhat based on the species, but once they hit that time they can and often continue to learn right up til the time of their passing. Some birds will speak very clearly and some not so clear. Some of them will only talk when they think that no one is there, some will only speak to certain peoples, my Grey, will only speak to me. Others, like my Amazon, will talk to anyone.

I would have loved an AG or Amazon :)

Jasper, GCC, speaks a few words. All the birds have other methods of communication that I find intriguing as I learn to discern each.

They are all fascinating to me. I now have two species with a male and female and I am fascinated at the different personalities of both of these pairs. I am also just as fascinated with the personalities of the different species of parrots. I guess you could say that I am fascinated by them.

We have a ringneck of an undetermined age and gender and he'll only talk legibly when nobody else is downstairs. He says everything my sister says to her quaker, words of praise, etc.

They were adopted 6 months ago and are steadily becoming more comfortable, so hopefully he'll do something besides make kissing noises in front of us.

I never expected any of my birds to talk, but my parakeet, 'tiel, and gcc all picked up talking- my parakeet did at the age of 6 years :O. So there's always a chance :)

When Jasper first started his words he would not do it in front of anyone else either. They were poking fun at me saying I was making it up, lol, but after a few months they finally heard him. He even got Pixie, the budgie saying 'Jasper'. Pixie will be doing his twittly whistles and every once in a while pop in a 'jasper'.

Jasper also seems to be the Peace Keeper of the lot. when the rare 'arguent occurs he speeds over to break it up !

Yes, each one has a different personality !

Hmmm, anything is possible but parrots learn human language out of necessity to communicate and these birds, been in bonded pair and ex-breeders, might not find the need for it because they have each other and are already communicating between themselves.

And that is ok, I really had not considered that they would talk when I came by them. I am happy though that Raj comes out daily and likes to sit with Pixie. He even will lean toward him and make is quite IR noises , like ones I have seen on Youtube of IR 'talking' to his stuffed toys. a sound that sounds like aeh-KU. And Kaleesi, who does not come out yet, has been playing with the toys and hiding less !

I didn't care if Myrtle would ever let me touch her as long as she was happy. She does not have as many words as I think she should. Some of them are just repeating Rambo. But it is so funny to hear them yelling "yoo hoo" back and forth from different rooms.

Well, Liz, how many words do you think that she should?
