So are these GCCs being trained for possible free flight?

They are so cute and pitiful at the same time. Does Kilaya try to mother them?
The first thing I thought of when I saw the newspaper as bedding is, you need some of Rambo's mulch. He turns cardboard boxes into pieces the size of a nickel.

Shredder newspapers are one of the best bedding materials. The ink acts as disinfectant. It is used by an Aussie breeder for more than 30 years.

I also use newspaper for the bottom of the cages (but I don't know where you got that the ink works as a disinfectant because it doesn't, it's soy-based). But why shred it? It's much easier and cleaner to use the entire sheets.

My breeder friend said certain chemicals in the ink that act as disinfectant.

There is a whole newspaper beneath the shredded papers.

I don't know if their is a disinfectant in the inks used for newsprint or not or how effective it would be if there were, but I use newspaper for my birds, too.

Nope. Soy-based ink is mostly soybean oil with a bit of hydrocarbon resin and some black pigment. That's it, nothing else. And none of these ingredients have any kind of disinfecting or antibacterial properties so your breeder friend has been misinformed.

My concern about shredded paper is that unless you change it every single day, you are running the risk of mold and fungus growing in there. Any kind of 'fluffy' bedding that is not changed every single day has the same problem... But, if you do change the bedding every day and put the shredded one in there because the birds like it, then I suggest you use alfalfa or timothy hay. Much more natural AND cleaner than newspaper (no black ink on it to rub on the birds feet and feathers).
