Iowa parrot rescue

What a great place - exactly after my own heart: they don't charge an adoption fee for their parrots, they just make sure they go to the right home! They should all be like that!

I am kind of slow to get to this thread but would like to know what the plants are. I have 3 tropical hibiscus to repot and keep in the Tiel room. I know I might only get the roots back but anything to make life more natural for them. I also have ferns I could put in there but do not know if they are safe. Do you know any other plant I can use? Many years ago, Charlie a tiel, found my mother's Christmas cactus. By the time I notice she had two sections chewed of and cactus juice running down the front of her. Mom gave up her cactus.

Liz, try spider plants. Keep one on its own and it will soon grow babies, pot the babies up and you will end up with a never ending supply of plants for your bird room!

That is nice Pajarita, I would rather pay a fee to give the rescue opportunity to continue to rescue though. They work so hard!

The problem with spider plants is that, apparently, they are VERY tasty to birds. I used to put a couple in the birdroom and had to stop because, once they discovered them, the birds ate them all the way down to the roots and would not allow them to grow back! And, I know it's a bit stupid but I hate to see a plant die (I am the kind the picks up semi-dead plants from other people's garbages - I feel sorry for them  ). The other one they also eat is one we call planta del vinten, back home (a binten was a 2 cent coin, a bit larger than a penny), it's kind of like an ivy because it grows hanging down and it has small round leaves. I don't know the name in English but this is what it looks like: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=pla ... ajaxhist=0.

I wish Ollie and Harlie would have trimmed ours down, it's huge!! They both had/have the odd nibble but that's it. I suggested spider plants because they grow so fast and hopefully the number of babies produced would stop liz having to go and get new ones all the time. I think with the number of birds you have Pajarita it wouldn't matter but if liz felt the same she could rotate them round to stop them dying?

Well, Liz has quite a number of tiels and they LOVE greens but it might work if she gets a couple and rotates them.

I've never been successful with spider plants... they don't die or anything but they don't really grow that much with me and hardly ever give me babies.

Liz would need far more than just a couple of spider plants to cover as many birds as she has. We had one in a pot that would have been about the same size as a 5 gal. bucket with lots of babies and Kiki destroyed it in a matter of a couple of days. That was even with both of us chasing her away from it.
