Birds are so graceful

Postby JessiMuse » Sat Nov 07, 2015 1:46 pm

So I'm eating my breakfast, and I put Lucy's little pellet cup next to me, because she doesn't like to eat pellets while inside the cage, and I was trying to find a way to keep her from stealing my food (for anyone who's curious, it didn't quite work that way completely, but she wasn't as persistent about taking my food).

Well, at one point, she was eating her pellets, and literally fell face-first, into the cup. I have no idea how it happened, but next thing I know, she was upside down in the cup, with her legs squirming as hard as they could.

I got her out quickly, of course, and while she wasn't amused, I couldn't help but laugh. Thank goodness it wasn't water.

Well, the cup is somewhat deep, and I didn't fill it up all the way. I think she probably focused so much on eating, that she leaned a little too far in, and lost her grip.

I never use cups for my birds and only use shallow bowls or saucers or plate for drinks or wet foods. I guess I have read too many stories of small birds getting stuck in cups of liquids and drowning, so I never chance it.

Well it's not actually a cup. It's actually a lot shallower than an actual cup. I was confused on whether to call it "cup" or "bowl", and my instincts went for cup.

It's actually a little food bowl, that's supposed to be in a cage. Thing is though, in the cage, it tilts downwards so the bird has an easier time to get the food at the bottom, and since the table is a flat surface, and I didn't even have it filled that much...

plop

Maybe I should get something shallower, though, for the table.

Of course, she does have something that's shallower for her water in her cage, so if there's a risk of that happening, it's less likely. Even then, I make sure the water is fresh and full, so she really doesn't have to lean that far, anyways.

It's not easy to find good shallow containers. Once, years and years ago, I found these little stainless steel 'saucers' - they are about 3 inches in diameter and have a small lip around them (maybe half an inch in height) and they are PERFECT for the smaller birds. But I only bought a few and I now regret it immensely as I've never been able to find any again.

I am always on the lookout for stainless steel bowls and I have quite the clollection, found at flea markets, stores on sale etc. It is really good to find the ones they can stand on.

I'm a fan of stainless steel, too. They're as nice and practical as they look! Also easy to clean, more often than not.

The bowl is actually quite steady, when set on a flat surface. Even when Lucy fell in, it didn't budge.

She's been very cautious about taking the pellets from the bowl (can't say I blame her), so today I decided to tip it on it's side, and let them spill out. Sure enough, she did not hesitate to try and gobble them up (though it takes her a bit of time, because they're kinda hard to break).

Maybe I should just get a paper plate to set them on, from here on out. Or a paper towel, since she tends to try and stand on the edge of the plate, causing it to flip up into her face. she's almost unfazed by that happening, at this point, but the I'm sure the pellets would fly everywhere.
