I use at least 5 grains and put in enough to feed all my birds for the day in each packet. when I get up I put a packet into a thermal cup with boiling water for 15 to 30 minutes. I rinse it in cold water before serving. I chop veggies and fruit enough for 3 days and store them in lemon water.

I do the soaked gains too Liz, I also soak/sprout nuts and seeds.

It has been a very busy day for me and I did not get to go through all of my saved material but here is one reference to pellets causing kidney damage although I am sure that I have more, this will have to do for tonight.

Here is another link that you may want, It does go into renal (kidney) disease but also contains a lot of other useful information. It concludes the links that I have saved that relate to kidneys, but I still have to go through my saved files, so there may still be more.

Thanks Wolf

Liz, what do you put in your "gloop", exactly? After poking around, I found Pajarita's recipe, and some of the things that she puts in it aren't even sold at the stores I go to for groceries.

Liz can tell you what she uses, but I ususally soak or sprout lentils, chickpeas, almonds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, millet, pumpking seeds, cashews, etc. or any combo of them for my base, I lower legume amount when I am watching protein, and I have cinnamon or tumeric or ginger etc.added, I also add red palm oil sometimes, and then to that I add vegetables in the morning meal and add vegetable and fruits in later day meals.

Thanks seagoatdeb. It's nice to have multiple references, when exploring substitutes. :) I'm not too keen on nutrition when it comes to myself, so trying to instill healthy eating habits for my birds can kind of a challenge for me. Trying to find a recipe that will work for my birds is going to be tricky, especially considering some of their picky habits. The diversity in species might be something to consider as well. Dudley and Lucy shouldn't be too much of a problem for they have some favorites in common, but Joey, being a non-parrot altogether, might need a gloop all his own, lest I somehow find something to work for all of them.

You may have posted it before and I just don't remember but what type of bird is Joey? Roughly where do you live? Are you able to order on line? I am asking so that I can better try to help you with your bird diet and who knows, it may also help with yours as so many other people have told me it has helped theirs too.

I use sausers for the amazons and large serving plates for the cocatiels. gimpy is fed in his cage, because he is not ready to come out, with olive oil dipping plates or plastic lids like on peanut butter jars. I have to put more than gimpy can eat in his cage. he sometimes gets company at meal time.
