My Meyers Sunny

Postby seagoatdeb » Wed Dec 02, 2015 10:21 pm

My Meyers Sunny is almost 7 months old now. he has changed from the unsocialized, bird bonded baby that I brought home. He still gets along with birds but he now loves humans too. He has bonded strongly to me and makes a noise almost like a puppy when he wants to get pet. He is really acrobabtic and is hanging by one foot upside down a lot. He loves to visit next door at my daughters and loves to flock and hang around with her baby birds. He is a big chewer, and I have to add pine blocks to his toys every week. He is very good natured, not tempremental at all. He is very affectionate and a very good eater. He throws himself into what he is doing, and he plays hard and eats heartily. He is very independant, full of energy and is on the go most of the day. It is hard to get a picture of him because he stops what he is doing, looks at me and will start heading towards me. This is the best one I could get. :meyers:

What a cute little guy! My Meyer's also charges cameras. I wonder if it's a Poicephalus thing.

Cute little guy! But I don't think it's a poi thing -at least, neither my redbelly, sennies or jardine ever did that- so I think it's more an individual thing.

It's not a Poi thing, my Red Belly is almost a ham, she just keeps posing and even looks at me so I can get a shot. I even put her on toys to get pics for my toy making group, and she always climbs on and poses for me...lol....I think its because he's a young bird and because I am close he should be on me. He was on the toy when I started this one and by the time I got the pic he was on his way to me.

Well I will post a new pic of Sunny with his cute yellow spots on his head when I get a new one, he still charges at the camera and most pics are blurry. I am so happy with the way he has come along. He is shy of new people but not as afraid of them as he used to be. He will let almost anyone give him a treat. He is a really good natured bird, rarely upset or frustrated and never holds grudges. He is always happy to see you come to talk to him or pet him. He is very trusting of me and he never bites, he will hiss and give a little soft beak pressure when he doesnt want to do something but it doesnt hurt. He is so easy to train, he just copies my Red Belly and tries to do everything she does. This week when I put him in his cage for a time out for continuing to fly on to my Red Bellys cage again and again, he said very clearly "Be a good Bird" so he is begining to understand context and also words better. He is very acrobatic and very affectionate. He is so different from my daughters Meyers, but they get along together fine when we visit.

One nice breakthrough he has made is he has finally figured out he is left footed so he is not dropping his food so much. My red Belly Gaugan eats with her right foot, she is missing part of a toe on her right foot so she feels more secure gripping a perch on one foot with her left. Sunny was determined to eat with the same foot she did and we all got our excercise picking up what he dropped. So now that he eats with his left foot we are all happy....lol

I just love it when they learn enough words to be able to tell what they are thinking. Rambo and I have had short conversations about things.

Rambo can use the same words with a different meaning. "Nite nite" can be the time of day. "Nite nite" could be what he wants to do. He will ask for help getting back to his sleeping place with "nite nite?". If I walk passed his cage while he is sleeping he will wake up enough to tell me "nite nite !"
"Help" can be asking for assistance. He can also call for "HELP" as he did when the neighbors cat came in the cat door.
Rambo has a strange relation ship with Aunt Betty. He will call to her saying "Betty" very clear. If she ignores him which is often he will yell "AUNT BETTY".

Myrtle is another matter. She understands most of what I say but does not use all the words like Rambo. She can start talking in English but when excited reverts to baby blabber.
The newest words are "Oh well !" Aunt Betty uses them to dismiss me when she does not agree. Now when she is telling Myrtle something that she does not want to listen to she will tell her "Oh well" very clear. She can declare that she is a "good girl". Myrtle can use the same words to tell me she is sorry by flying to my shoulder and asking "good girl?".

Well. Now I can't remember where I was going with this post.
