liz wrote:I just love it when they learn enough words to be able to tell what they are thinking. Rambo and I have had short conversations about things.

Rambo can use the same words with a different meaning. "Nite nite" can be the time of day. "Nite nite" could be what he wants to do. He will ask for help getting back to his sleeping place with "nite nite?". If I walk passed his cage while he is sleeping he will wake up enough to tell me "nite nite !"
"Help" can be asking for assistance. He can also call for "HELP" as he did when the neighbors cat came in the cat door.
Rambo has a strange relation ship with Aunt Betty. He will call to her saying "Betty" very clear. If she ignores him which is often he will yell "AUNT BETTY".

Myrtle is another matter. She understands most of what I say but does not use all the words like Rambo. She can start talking in English but when excited reverts to baby blabber.
The newest words are "Oh well !" Aunt Betty uses them to dismiss me when she does not agree. Now when she is telling Myrtle something that she does not want to listen to she will tell her "Oh well" very clear. She can declare that she is a "good girl". Myrtle can use the same words to tell me she is sorry by flying to my shoulder and asking "good girl?".

Well. Now I can't remember where I was going with this post.

There are many times i dont know where i am going either, but it ends up somewhere...lol

Yes it is so great when you get them understanding things and communicating. With Gaugan, I can tell a lot by what she says, when she says "what are you doing? she is asking me if what she is chewing on is okay for her to chew on. if i say no Gaugan, she will do a big wing out turn around posture to show me she is not happy that she is not allowed, but it is something she was willing to ask about. She is often stubborn about certain things like painting frames and anything wicker so I have had to remove those things. When she says peek a boo, or Hey Gaugy Bird she is trying to get my attention and then will figure out a way to tell me what she wants. When she is mushy out come the Love you, and Such a good bird. When someone laughs she joins in laughing and when someone is mad and speaking loud she starts doing it too, she always wants to be part of whats gong on. Most of her vocalizations are human speech. Sunny tends to talk in the morning and then in the afternoon and goes through all the sounds he knows and words he knows.

Right now, the most amazing thing has happened and now i am sure that when i picked Sunny he was just the right Poi for Gaugan. She is finally allowing him to even be on top of the cage playground on her cage, when she is there, as long as he doesnt get too close and is willing to move away when she decides he should. He is so happy about it, he so loves to be near her when she is nice to him. He won with sheer persistence, she just wants peace I think....lol. he is so energetic and hyper...lol....When he gets older and is more hormonal things may change, but Gaugan is a larger size Red Belly and Sunny is a smaller size Meyers so she will always be larger than him and that wil give her an advantage. I have noticed lately that when he is making a lot of vocal sounds, that every once in a while Gaugan makes a sound back. Ususally, I am the only one she answers back too.

The only place there is the most trouble is if one has flown to me the other has to be there too. they both land on my laptop and it is a touch screen so there nails are causing havoc to the top of the screen as well as opening windows and doing all kinds of wierd things. Gaugan makes it to one of my shoulders from there but Sunny is obsessed with perching on my laptop. Gaugan is a moody type of bird, and Sunny is the least moody Poi I have ever seen. They sure keep things interesting to say the least....lol

Gaugan is a more sensitive parrot or maybe its just because we loved each other at first sight, but Gaugan can "get" my meaning and knows when I need my space or if I am grouchy, from the time she was a very young bird, but Sunny is an impulsive, hyper sort and figures with
sheer persistence he will win somehow, so often it is back in the cage for him so I can find some time to type.

Rambo has control of what he says to the point that the same words could mean different things. "nite nite" means he thinks it is time for bed and would likes assisted to get back to his cage. "nite nite ?" is asking if it is time. "nite nite !" means what is wrong with you woman and why are you still up. When he thinks that it is late enough for everyone to go to sleep it is "NITE NITE".

There are so many times that I have to fight back the laughter that he would not understand at the time.

Rambo was loved by all the Hospice and EMS people. When coming in the house they all looked for him if he was not at the door to greet them with the dogs. Every ones phones had pictures of him.

Just an update on Sunny who is soon to be 11 months old, He is a very easy going guy, he gets over anything right away and does not hold grudges and is not a moody type. He likes to be doing what everyone else is doing. He likes to play hard, he eats well and likes just about every food. He is very active, especially in the morning. Some mornings, he is flying all over staying in each place for only a minute or too, while My hubby, Gaugan and I all just watch him, almost in awe, he is the highest energy poi I have ever seen. He is always more mellow later in the day and that is when he is more mushy and also has a longer attention span. So if i was ever to decide to start clicker training it would have to be later in the day.

I am very happy with his progress, he just fits right in with us. He is leery of strangers, but he is not afraid of them now, and he wont let just anyone pet him but he does not mind if a new person touches the top of his beak. He seems to feel that a touch on the top of the beak is an appropriate greeting. He really likes to have his beak rubbed too by me.

Right now he has a lot of yellow spots on his head, and he is feeling his hormones a litlle, I have had a few courtship dances performed for me. Every once in a while he decides to test me, and when he aticipates i am going to put him back in the cage, he just keeps flying away, and finally i am able to catch him and get him to go back. After that he is good for weeks until he decides to test me again. He isnt very nippy so I hope thats a good sign that he wont be a nippy guy when he is older and more hormonal, but we will see later.

Sounds like everything is progressing fantastically well! But I don't think you have to worry about him becoming nippy. Of all my birds, the only one that would, when hormonal, get a little rough (and you couldn't even call his pecks actual nips) is Sweetpea, the male Senegal which hated all humanity for years and years and which attacked me mercilessly for over 3 years. I think that once they find their place in the 'flock' and feel content with their life, all types of aggression disappear because it's really not in their nature to be rough or even mean.
