BabyBird wrote:My parrot was from a pet shop, in a cage about a quarter size of the one shes in now, with two little pots of seed at the bottom, no water, and she had to share that cage with another parrot. The lady only educated us about the bird so we would tick the review boxes on the paper to say that she had done a good job, simply only telling us this for the money, not for the birds health. She told us the birds wouldn't touch the food and only knock it over(the bowls were 2 little ceramic dishes at the bottom, no wonder they couldn't eat from them) (the conures looked terrified, when I picked the one I wanted the member of staff roughly grabbed it and stuffed him into a box) and they would try to escape, (she had locks around the cage doors) another member of staff came in holding what it seemed to be a dead budgie. The budgies were crammed into cages and stacked up, there were Quakers, conures, 2 galah cockatoos in a cage which looked hardly suitable for 1 of them, I wanted to buy them all.. But I couldn't so I just got my little conure instead, she looked thin and scared when we brought her home, and quite small.. We are told that she's 1 year old, she came with information papery which were printed from what I looks like 'Microsoft office word' with a printer that was lacking black ink, and the information was just copy and pasted for wiki, she came with no documents.. Just a bag of seed and a pot of grit (we don't give her grit though).. Sometimes I wonder, do we even care about the animals anymore, or do we hair see the greed and money in them instead :( :( :(

There is a pet shop nearbye that is very similar to this. I just cant see how people can be so cruel! They just cant see that is a living animal. It upsets me to think about it. Also at the markets we go to there are some people who come each week, about five gccs in a cage hardly big enough for a budgie, their beaks are over grown (A sign of fatty liver disease most likely), and three young galahs squished up into a rusty sortof chicken cage only really big enough for one sun conure and heaps of budgies in a cage way to small, and irns like five in the same size cage as the five gcc. And it goes on and on.

It is so hard not to buy eveyone! I feel sorry for them all, and if those people would just think for a second 'would i apreciate being in a cage that big' would they stop?
Oh also, I dont beleive Ive asked your birdies name? :D

Well, I tell you, I neither go to petstores where they sell live animals nor to bird fairs. My reason is two-fold:
1) I refuse to patronize people who think of animals as merchandise
2) I don't want to see the poor animals because, if I do, I will end up buying one and that only serves to put another animal in the same position and money in their pocket which only encourages these people to keep on doing what they are doing so, in reality, you are not helping to solve the problem but, in a way, contributing to it.

Mind you, I am not criticizing you for buying your birds! I would have done the same thing! And have, as a matter of fact! But, precisely because I know how impossible it is to resist buying them if, for nothing else, to ensure that at least one of them will have a good home is that I stay away from them.

Yeah I know, there where no breeder around for 3-4 hours where we lived so we took a chance, sorry for contributing, but I was afraid that he would lie in the same fate as the poor budgie in the shop keepers arms.. Oh well, we will never buy from there again that's for sure :) but I'm happy that she's safe and sound here and not spending another day at that place :D

Oh, I agree! I would have done the same thing! I can't stand to see an animal suffering... and that's the reason why I no longer volunteer at rescues, because I want to bring them all home with me!

Haha I would love to be an RSPCA officer but it require a lot of training and I'm not prepared to leave Sidney at home for so long she would be sad on her own :)

The thing about a bird rescue is that they are getting better than they came from. By volunteering you are giving them better than they would have without you. You may even be able to teach by example better ways to care for the birds.

I wish that was true, Liz, but it's not more often than not. Parrots are like children and they suffer terribly when they are separated from their 'parents' so, even when they are not eating the right food, live in a small cage or are not even allowed to come out of it, they still suffer terribly when they are sent to a rescue.

But still volunteering and giving them the love they need enriches their lives :hatched:

There is no doubt they suffer but every little helps towards giving them a better life and in time hopefully they will be enjoying a brand new & much improved one.
They have to be equipped to some extent to be able to move on otherwise nature would just stop. It's a sad fact of life that it's needed for any creature really and us people too.
