I am not sure, but I think that it mat be related to the fact that parrots feed their mates and offspring, so the young parrot who has accepted you as its parent expects you to feed it and if an adult it mate bods with us and once again they expect to be fed. I suppose that it could be for some other reason altogether, but my birds are not telling me what it is, It may be a secret.

Does this also mean no more sharing food from my mouth?

If you can do it without getting your saliva on it, I suppose it would be safe, but our mouth is a treasure trove of bacteria that is not beneficial to parrots. This bacteria does not care what it gets on or mixes with.

It is cute and funny and the bird is usually fascinated by it and is a willing partner in this type of activity. I am sure that we have all done it and some still do, at least sometimes. I hesitate to say no, you must not do this, or to say you can't do it, so let's just say that it is not our best idea and leave it at that.

Yes, they always try, that's for sure! But you can have closeness without actually allowing the bird into your mouth. I give them kisses on the curvy part of their top beak and allow them to rest it against my lips when they kiss me. Zoey Senegal likes to 'chew' on my lips so I let her do it on the outside edge of the bottom one (I am sure there is some bacteria there too but I would imagine is much, much less). And you can 'feed' them from your mouth if you hold a large piece of, say, fruit between your lips and they bite from the part that sticks out which was never IN your mouth. They get used to the limitations and, after a while, they don't insist on putting their beak inside your mouth - it's just a matter of persistence and consistency.

when birds feel like sharing, i stick my finger in their mouth and pump it so they can regurgitate on that. to redirect them away from my mouth. but still, they can be persistent sometimes so i just purse my lips real tight so they can't get in.

i remember when i first got lily and we were playing a game or something and i went "ohhhh" and opening my eyes and my mouth real wide to respond to something she did.

she stuck her entire head in my mouth. pppfithp!

boy that surprised me

I don't encourage them to put their beaks near my face at all tbh. Little Ollie took a chunk out my lip yesterday. First time he has bit in weeks though.
