More on feral mitreds

One of the colonies in California is, apparently, moving to a nearby town. Enjoy!

I am glad to here that they are doing well enough to need to break off of the main flocks and expand their territory, that is a good sign. Thanks for sharing.

I would assume that a flock of 200 birds does not find enough food easily in a city environment and, in truth, these are more like neighborhoods or suburban areas of San Jose than far from each other towns.

But what I like the most about this article is the positive reaction of the people who live in the area, their fascination with the parrots and sense of awe when they found the flock in their trees - and their sharing it with their kids, of course!

And yes, the picture is that of an amazon, that is not a conure, the tail is too short and the body is thicker.

I live in the west los angeles area and there are some conures that fly over my apartment regularly, maybe even once a day. not a flock of 200 but maybe 50. i assume they are mitreds because that is what everyone says they see around here....EG a friend saw a flock of mitreds in mar vista (near venice beach) which i am guessing is the same flock i see, since I live near there. from my window, however, i can only tell for sure they are conures.

there is also a flock of wild nandays that live about six miles to the west of me, but i think they pretty much stay down there close to ocean.

apparently there is some bush with sticky fruit that grows around here that they like to eat.

further to the north, there is a flock of misfits that has some amazons and blue-headed conures. I am guessing that what is in the above picture, though there might be multiple flocks like this. check this out for some cool stories about the california parrots, especially Tavia:

There are also feral colonies in Southern states with warm climates like Florida and Texas... and then there are the quakers feral colonies that are all over the place -even up in Chicago! I think it's fabulous (we have a couple of feral quakers flocks in Jersey, too) but let's see if we can get people to accept them instead of keep on trying to eradicate them.
