Bird hoarding case

Postby Pajarita » Tue Jan 19, 2016 12:44 pm

This happened real close to me and is a typical case. He started 5 years ago with two birds and ended up calling himself a 'rescuer' with over 200 and keeping them in bad conditions...

They were sent to different rescue groups for rehabilitation and future adoption. Here is a list of all the birds but the doves:

This is why I always say that loving them is not enough, you need to be able to give them the care and life they deserve. The man was actually crying when they were taking the birds and he relinquished them all voluntarily so it's not as if he was a bad man, he just got over his head and thought he was doing them a favor... And that is very easy when you start adding birds too fast and why it's always recommended that you wait, at the very least, a couple of years before acquiring more.

It is easy to do, I know as from the time Kiki showed up until Kookooloo came to me was about 6 months and in the following 6 months I had reached 6 birds with a promise to get one more for Keeta That was the point that I stopped getting birds. In a way, I am lucky as there is only one pet store in my area and they don't have birds all of the time and there are no avian rescues in any of the surrounding counties. I have to drive 2 hours one way to reach the nearest avian vet. Still every now and then I see birds up for rehoming. But I quickly pass them over as I really don't have room for more at this time. I have enough land to do a small rescue, but not the funds to build the buildings it would require.

It is so easy to get caught up in wanting to give them a better chance and hard to turn away.

I'm always afraid of taking in more animals than I can provide for, and this is the very reason. I grow so attached that I never want to give them up. If I were to foster for a rescue, no mater what the animal may be, I would probably end up adopting every one. This is why I make sure I have everything to provide the best for whatever animal I'm about to take in (Alex being the exception because my parents got him for me, but I was lucky enough to actually have enough room and time to provide for him).

But I honestly don't understand this kind of mindset though. I mean, yeah the rescue facilities may look like they have crap conditions for the animals, but the point of them is to find better homes for the animals that don't have homes. If you can't provide the best conditions for that many animals, then don't keep that many animals. At least find people who can provide for some of them.

Maybe this is why I'm so afraid of becoming an animal hoarder myself. I'm afraid of becoming something I don't understand. Then again, it might be better that I don't understand it.

I agree with this. It was nice of him, at first, but in the end it was not.

And that is the problem, they lose sight of the fact that they are no longer giving the birds the life that they wanted to. They, somehow, become blind to this.
