A 'funny' story

Postby Chantilly » Sat Feb 20, 2016 6:19 am

Ok, this has nothing to do with my Tilly or Shrek at all. Just something I found frustrating.. and quite funny at the same time.
I was at our 'local zoo' (well I geuss you cant really call it that more like a park) , sometime last week, and they have a male cockatoo named George in his own aivery, he has always been their by himself because he kills all of his mates (females that are put in with him). And practically everyone who volonteers there is scared of him and dosnt like being near him. Every time we go there (mainly on my request to go visit George) I will call him down and he will get a nice big scratch from me, who is desperately trying to fit the tip of my finger through this 30cmx30cm wiring... That is doubled over!!! George is sooo sweet and really, I think he just needs a good family rather than a billion strangers looking at him and continuing on walking and admiring the other birds. Who-ever gave him up, I doubt it was due to behavioural issues, he is a cutie and just wants a HUMANS love/ not a birds.
Anyway when it got busy we walked over to some other birds (I'm really not a fan of patting this bird everyone in town is scared of  ), a major mitchel and black cocky with clipped wings on a brach/gym (they are on display) together. Anyway, I cant reach them over the fence (and knowing me I HAVE to greet each bird I see) so I lift myself up sort of onto the fence (So my stomach is on it and my feet are in the air) and I was giving this Major Mitchel who so desperately wanted attention a scratch (the black cocky wanted it too, but he was up to high and couldnt get down). Then a volonteer comes so I hop down and Mum asks if I can go in with the birds, he says no but that he can bring the major mitchel over so I can pet it, but he first had to find a female volonteer to put the black cocky away (because it supposedbly hates men). So he found someone to do that, he goes in the cage, gets the major mitchel, brings it near the fence, I go to pat it and he says "Oh no, you cant pet her, she dosent like it." he puts her back on the perch, walks out locks the gate and walks off.
Im just standing there like WHAT LA.... You just said I could pet her, and I was before you came and she was loving it like she never gets that sort of one on one attention!
I mean, I could tell the guy was scared (like really scared..) of the major mitchel even, but all she wanted was a little love. And guess what he went and did after all that. Walked the dingos. Mmm, which would you be more scared of dingos or a parrot? I mean the dingos are trained and all, but they could do allot more damage than a major mitchel(size of a galah)
Eell thanks for reading my little rant, I guess I just needed to get that out

That is a shame that the birds do not have human contact. Maybe they are too short handed to spare anyone that could be in with the birds.

You could ask "the powers that be" if you can volunteer to work in their enclosure.

My ideal vacation would be to go to Australia for a month and volunteer at the Australian zoo. I would want to work at their wildlife rehab center. To me that would be wonderful. I did it at the NC zoo and it was so rewarding.
