Bad Nail Trim

Loki was bleeding getting her nails trimmed the quick was long and her nails are brown so it's hard to see she's ok now though and she's well behaved getting them done, Rocko on the other hand struggles and starts breathing heavy and makes me scared lol but he got through it he's my little Cockatoo.

Nails grow lol, I haven't clipped them in a good few months so they needed to be done.

I have never clipped mine. They run around on the floor and wear them down. Gimpy may have to get his clipped but he is still so scared.

How does the floor wear them down? Mine sleep on a shower perch but it still doesn't keep them down and they have natural wood perches too.

I hate to clip nails, it is too easy to cut the quick on a dark nail. I use perches that help to keep the nails rounded and attach the to the outside of the cage so they only can use them when they are out but i put them near places they like to go. They also use them to help take the flakines from their beaks when they need to, so I havent had to clip nails in over 19 years.

They don't work for me and I have them and they use them a lot but don't keep the nails down.I don't mind clipping their nails its easy and I have to clip my customers birds nails if they need it done.

I use them all of the time and I still have to trim my nails. But I have them in my birds cages as well as on the doors of the cages where possible the only thing I have to trim on my birds is the beak of a budgie with liver issues but not his nails, It is really just a matter of placement in relation to where your birds move around, I really like them at their food and water dishes as their toes are constantly changing their grip while eating and drinking.

Some Parrots sharpen their nails so that could be a reason for the perches not to work lol.My birds nails don't get badly long or anything just sharp.

I've never had to trim a single cockatiel's nails and I had some that had liver damage (which is what usually makes beaks and nails grow too much) so it seems to me that using tree branches as perches is all they need to keep them from overgrowing. If your birds claws don't grow overly long and you cut them only because they get sharp with the consequent stress and pain you are causing them, I suggest -for the good of your birds- you train yourself to put up with a bit of discomfort (tiels nails are so small and their grip is so weak that they never really hurt us) and just file the sharp point down a little bit to blunt it and stop cutting them.
