Hello again everyone. I have missed being here every day, school is crazy, and I have to try and finish of the Term before our areal teacher comes (so I have been doing heaps and heaps of hours of home work ) I will be back more in and towards the holidays
I thought I would share some recent photos of my lovely boys where I volunteer,

Meet Cocky,

This bird has 3 names form volunteers, Patrick, Twister and Turn Around <-(why srsly), I know how confusing this is and so I decided to call him what he has been called the most (hence he says it) Cocky. Also I know petting under the wings triggers hormones, but he sits there and just holds your hand under his wilng and clings on to it like he is scared to let go, Colcky reaaly is the loveliest lil boy. Also-he is going blind, I dont know if you can tell frim these photos or not but his eyes look crackled like a beak.

Now for Joey, Joey hates everyone but me, no idea why, but he likes me, he will sit under my legs for hours and just have scratches. Also he is obsessed with making this nest under his tree stump, It always seems as if he is putting rocks and leaves in it, but I am thinking he might actually be taking them out... Joey is my favourite bird at the park, over the almost year I have been there we have formed a great bond with eachother, he is so loving and if I could take one more bird home, it would have to be him, he is my baby, and I am in pure love with him. Recently he learnt to say something I always tell him, and when I leave his cage he now goes 'What you doin'... I love you!' So cute.

Goldie the Yellow tailed (presumed male) black cocky. Goldie has brain damage, and can not fly. He was born in a Zoo, and because he was not coping there was bought of by the park. Goldie (and roomate Benny the red tail) ate a snail, that had eaten rat poo leading to paralysis, these guys (who ate the snail whilst at the sanctuary) got lucky because the 10 black cockatoos at the zoo also ate this snail, and they all actually ended up dying. So yeah, there is a sad story.

AWWWWW, wonderful photos!! And I LOVE hearing their stories! Toos (or cockies, as you call them) are very hard to resist. They are sooooo loving, cute and funny that it's no mystery why so many people fall in love with them and buy them. Unfortunately for them, they are sooooo very hard to keep happy and healthy that they all end up been rehomed many, many times. They are the number one given-up bird here in America.

Do they know why Cockie is going blind? And, OMG, what a terribly sad story about the cockatoos and the rat poison at the zoo!!! And it's such a terrible, terrible death, too! How could that have happened? I mean, zoos are always very careful about that kind of thing...

Thankyou! Yes Toos are the best little birds, I think that they are also most given up here- its awful.

I have a friend who knows about Cockies eye (she was a volunteer for over a year before I started) but she is back in England and I have not heard from her since Feb. It is some sort of disorder- I dont remember the long name for it, but Cocky is a old bird, so that might play a factor.

As for the black cockatoos, here in Summer (in QLD atleast) we can get like weeks of non stop rain, and with wet weather follows snails. (Black cockatoos much fancy a good nack of snails)- and honestly everywhere there are birds-there are rats. We have been having a rat problem simply because we have chooks and ducks. the snail eats the rat poo (and rats cary all these diseases) and then when the toos eat the snail 'bam' they are down and without the owners knowing what had happened, and then it is a long trip to find a vet who can help you. That is all I know, it is pretty scary though! And I dont think you can control snail population can you? In addition to that, not much you could do while it is drenching rain...

Heres another Joey baby boy from today(we are going up more often so as we can see Alpha (<-I spelt that wrong earlier Its Alpha not Alfa) and have him grow up around us). So I just gotta go be with my Joey boy .

Snails like beer. Even like cheap beer. I use an old can, dig a hole to set it in with just the lip above ground then cover it with something you know that snail crawl under. The cover keeps the animal out of it, prevents dilution from rain and reduces dehydrating. The snails crawl in and drink, get drunk then fall in and drown.

Thank you for taking in handicapped and disabled birds. Even an ugly bird can become beautiful when you give them the love they need. Also these birds know their problems and are so grateful for the care and love you give. Even if you are never able to touch a traumatized bird he will still respond and communicate his happiness.
