An article about MAARS (Minnesota Avian Adoption and Rescue Services) which has gone from a rescue to a sanctuary (I guess they will have to change their name now). I wish them well from the bottom of my heart but sanctuaries are more difficult to keep up with than rescues, actually, because all you can count on are donations and if they are already 'scraping by', I don't know how much longer they will be able to do it... I have to say thought that I did not like the room in the picture so I hope this is only a bad example of where they keep them - it looks like a basement (pipes on the ceiling) and a teensy, tiny window, lots of plastic. I also do not agree with their statement that MAARS "is one of only a handful of sanctuaries across the country that provide hands-on and compassionate care for parrots for life" as the Director stated, adding that there are only "another 20 to 30 smaller rescue centers care for birds for shorter periods" I don't know exactly where she got her figures from or if I am misunderstanding but I don't know of any good rescue that doesn't offer hands-on, compassionate care for life and, although there are bad rescues, there are also lots and lots of good ones.
