Yes, it is good news! Especially with her that is so very high-strung and needs the exercise to get rid of all that anxiety and stress hormones so she can calm down. She was real happy to see my husband this morning [he came home last night after she was asleep] because, as the previous owner commented, she is more of a daddy's girl while Peaches is more a mommy's girl

Time for an update. The days are already getting longer and the birds have noticed the difference and are showing behaviors related to it.

Linus too is still chewing and chewing boxes even though the days are getting longer and the birds have already noticed (at least, the long days species have). As has been happening since he first came here, he is allowing more feathers to remain and his body is almost completely white now - the chest has 'holes' where you can still see the skin, his legs are completely bare and will always be because no feather grows there but, although he is not 'evenly' covered because he still barbers and plucks some of his contours, he doesn't look like a bird ready for the pot now.

Sophie CAG is still enamoured of her too boyfriend. She now eats from the same plate on occasion (she always wanted her own dish before) and is sporting a plucked neck on one side from his ardent 'kisses'.

Precie and Zeus Zon are beginning to chew in earnest and Zeus is beginning to show breeding displays but, so far, no aggression. And I just wanted to mention how smart they are! They not only remember, they make decisions on their own based on experiences that might not even be that common or regular to them. My husband goes into the birdroom on occasion, he repairs the chewing boards all around the room and replaces the ropes that hold the platforms hanging from the ceiling but he doesn't go in any regular manner -meaning, every so many number of days or weeks or for a pre-determined number of hours). It varies greatly - sometimes, he doesn't go in for two or three months and, sometimes, he goes in every day for a little while each day and for a number of days - it all depends on how much needs doing and spare time he has but also because I don't let him in until they finish their breakfast or when they are resting in the middle of the day. But even though this activity is not regular at all, they have learned that, if he goes in, they have to go into their cage (he is afraid of them and refuses to work in there unless they are caged) and, as soon as they see him coming in, both of them march to their cage on their own and with Precie saying: 'UHHHHHH, too bad, too bad, too bad!"

Nadia and Mami Zon are now looking all raggedy -more Mami than Naida, of course- again and they had sex yesterday morning for the first time this season. They never stop chewing but, they do start chewing in earnest around this time of the year and, soon, Naida will start nesting in one.

Zoey and Sweetpea Senegal are doing very well. It has taken years but it seems that she has finally accepted him completely... now if he would only try to feed her in her beak!

Isis Redbelly is having issues with Zoey because she has now decided to love my husband and she is taking a whole lot of exception to the fact that Zoey is trying to 'steal' her beloved. They had a fight on my husband's shoulder this morning and he ended up with a big bite to his left ear, something that, according to him is my fault for 'allowing' it -as if I could prevent this from happening (sight).

Davy Redbelly continues to be more interested in Keku Quaker than in Isis Redbelly. They are always together and I am now beginning to put them in the same cage for a little while and, two days ago, I left her there for the night (will do it again tomorrow night and more and more often until they live in the same cage). Keku loves him and he loves her. And, unfortunately, she has learned all his bad habits! To put the icing on the cake, they have discovered my pantry and I've had to put all my stuff in containers because they were chewing all the boxes and bags I had in there and no amount of telling them anything or taking them out of there made any difference. BUT Keku is beginning to obey when I tell her to "DROP IT!" when she steals something she shouldn't touch. She continues to improve, eats leafy greens like there is no tomorrow, bathes regularly, flies like the Red Baron and is the sweetest, sweetest thing, never trying to bite or even nip.

Codee GCC and Pablo Peachfront are doing very well. Pablo has slowly relaxed and learned that I am no threat to him in any way and not only does not shy away from my hand but actually approaches it when I come to him with food, taking treats out of my hand as if he had always done it. I do need to clip his wing though...

Paquita and Rajah Plet doing great but I worry that she doesn't seem to want to climb up to the roosting perch any more... I don't know why because she is doing very well otherwise, eating, drinking, bathing, etc. I even put still another 'ladder' for her to use but no cigar.

Duke and Blue Budgie have been fighting because they both want Susan. I've interfered the few times I've seen them and, for what I can see, there have been no real wounds in either one (I check them ever time) but I don't know if it's that Duke is very stubborn or that Susan has not yet decided but you can see all three together all the time, Susan in the middle and one boy to each side (little floozy needs to make up her mind, if you ask me). Funny thing is, there are three more hens and only one more male so it's not as if Duke and Blue don't have any other choice. Tweety benefits from the situation and has been courting both Flora and one or both of the twins (I can't tell Margarita from Marigold, they are clutch sisters so they are both the same age, both female and both completely yellow so, for all I know, he is trying to get jiggy with both of them :D ).

Casper and Peaches Indian are doing great! They LOVE their gloop, eat lots of fruits, have relaxed a bit (but not completely, we still need more time) and are now coming out of their cage regularly (Peaches more than Casper) and even flying -clumsily and weakly still but a bit improved nonetheless. They are sweet, sweet birds... never trying to bite and always responding with sweet breeding displays when one talks to them. My husband adores them and always stops by their cage (they mostly stay on top of it when they come out -their cage door is always open) a couple of times a day when he is home.

Javi Caique is still in soft molt :( It's only a few pins here and there on his cheeks but still... I guess we will have to wait until the next fall to see if it stopped for good or what. But he continues to improve otherwise, he now flies about one third of the time instead of always walking to his destination and his flights have become much better in both strength and skill (straight lines, better landings, etc). AND he now says 'Come on - Come on - Come on' whenever he wants me to pick him up from wherever he is. He got a good scolding the other day because he bit my husband's cheek for no good reason other than the fact that he is a cantankerous little thing... He was on top of the Indians cage and, when my husband leaned over to talk to them, he rushed to his side and bit him!

I found Pablo dead this morning. He must have been, at least, 27 years old and had not had a good life, the poor thing! I had seen him sleeping on the bottom of the cage twice in the last couple of days and, the first time, I thought he was dead because he was laying on his chest and belly with his head laying on the ground stretched out in front of him but, when I walked up to the cage, he woke up and walked away so I figured it was one of those weird things he did (he is the only bird I've ever had that slept with his head hanging down). Then, when I saw him the second time, I did not think he was dead but I did think that twice in a couple of days was not a good sign. And, this morning, he was dead. He had the best life I could give him and I think he was content even though he was so severely handicapped... he certainly enjoyed his food, his baths and loved his sweetheart, Codee with whom he cuddled every day and every night. The one that worries me now is Codee because Lord knows I don't have the time to spend with her that she needs to be happy so I am going to get in touch with the couple that adopted Leo, a handicapped male GCC, from me to see if they would take her and, if they not, I guess I will see if I can find a male for her.

I'm so sorry. I know the sick and handicapped ones take even more of our hearts. You gave him a great life.

Well, I don't think that anybody could have given him a 'great' life given the degree of physical deterioration he had and his handicaps but the great thing about animals is that they never dwell on their problems, they just keep on going and courageously and happily make lemonade out of lemons every single time. And he did that... he had Code to love and be loved by, he loved his food and every single morning anxiously waited for his fresh produce pacing in the exact spot where I always put it, he took his nice baths and had learned not be afraid of me so although it was not a great life, it seemed to be good enough for him.

But poor Codee! Today was the first day in a looooong time that I heard her screeching (she is on my shoulder now but Keku is not happy about it -Zoey is on my other shoulder but they have shared me for a long time and have no issues with it).

We had so many of the Weston birds lose mates. One, Zorro, even lost a mate twice. (2 pairs of brown lorries came in. Both pairs lost a mate, so we paired up the remaining two and one of them died). With one exception, they all seemed to recover quickly. We had an amazon who seemed to call for his missing mate for many months.

Oh, it's not that I think that Codee is not going to 'get over it', I know she will! It's that GCCs need constant company to be happy and I cannot provide it for her... I have too many and need to find them all a companion so the few hours they spend with me on one-on-one are enough to keep them happy because they always have their birdfriend.

I swear, these birds are going to be the death of me -most likely, from a heart attack!

Yesterday, I had to put them in their cages a little earlier because my daughter, Lara, had not found a later appointment (I always make any appts after 2:30 pm) at the hair salon and, to put the icing on the cake, I miscalculated the time to get ready and had to rush so, by the time, I got to the hair place, I was already worrying that I had not done the final check (I always go room by room checking on every bird and cage before I leave) so, the first thing I did when I came back was look to my right where the budgies, Codee and plets cages are and LO AND BEHOLD! Codee's cage side door was opened and she was not in her cage! Needless to say, my heart stopped and I started calling her but, with all the dogs barking like maniacs, I couldn't hear her and I was like a nut running all over the place, going down on my knees, etc with my heart firmly lodged in my throat because all the cats were out. She had flown accross the living room, into the dining room and had gotten inside Keku's cage on her own (I leave Keku in Davy's cage every now and then because they love each other). PHEWWWW!

Now, Codee has never, ever, in all the years I've had her and even before that (she used to belong to friends of ours so I know her since she was a little bird), opened her cage and flown out but this is what happens when birds are lonely... they always try to find company and they do it by leaving their cage. I really need to find her a mate!

Then, this morning, I opened all the cages and was doing my chores like I always do and, also like I always do, kept on looking toward Peaches and Casper IRN's cage because they still don't fly well at all and, when they fly, they almost always end up on the floor when LO AND BEHOLD! Peaches was not anywhere on sight! Back to heart stopping and me screaming her name (they don't answer me like most of my other birds do) and looking everywhere in the dining room without finding her! After a couple of minutes of this, I see her profile (their profile is unmistakable because of their tail) against the early light of dawn coming from the living room. She had flown all the way accross and to the very end of the living room and was perching on top of Codee's cage... PHEWWWW!

My poor birds did not come out yesterday all day long... I came down with a real bad cold or flu on Thursday and I could not sleep a wink all night because I had to spend the night sitting up in order to be able to breathe. As usual, with every respiratory infection I get, my asthma acts up and I just couldn't get a full breath - I almost woke up my husband to take me to the hospital but I managed. But, on Friday, between the lungs all closed up, the pain in my chest every time I coughed, my splitting headache, the constant runny nose and the fever, I just couldn't stay up and although my husband fed them, he had to go to work so there was nobody downstairs for them to come out and fly. My poor husband drove 3 hours each way, once in the morning and again in the afternoon so he could do the animals and he helped this morning, too, and I am feeling a little bit better (I could sleep a few hours last night and my lungs are a bit more open today) so I am staying up until 12 noon so they can fly a bit (if I can make it because I think my fever is going up again). I got to get myself some antibiotic and start taking it before it becomes pneumonia (I always end up with pneumonia because because of my asthma and my auto-immune condition).

I am going on vacation for a family reunion back home next Thursday and I am so behind on everything it's not even funny! My husband went to ABBA to pick up seeds but I still have to make gloop, get produce, write all the instructions, label all the containers, the gloop bags and the cages with the individual instructions for each bird (like whether they get liver stuff in their water and what kind of seed they get, etc.) and I haven't even started to pack! Thank goodness that, at least, I got all the presents bought and all my outfits chosen (it's summer down there).
