Dogs, birds, snakes, bunnies... living with animals is like breathing air for some pf us...

I was late paying my cable bill so had to do it in person. The lady in the window and I started talking about our critters. The old man behind me said he was raised that animals do not come in the house. I told him me too and as soon as I had my own house I filled it with critters.

When I was older and would go home to visit my parents of course my critters went with me. I did not have many at that time since I lived in an apartment. My critters were welcome then. Parents will put up with a lot just to get their kids to come home and visit.

My father was also raised with the belief that animals did not come into the house (my grandfather raised show dogs as well as farm animals - he even had a monkey!) but, of course, ours did so he changed the rule to say that animals should not go into his bedroom. But even that didn't work out in the long run because, eventually, he allowed one dog (but only one, mind you!) not only to go into his bedroom but actually sleep on his chest when he took a nap on the weekends. His name was Simon and he was a toy rat terrier and one of the smartest and most fearless dogs I've ever had. As an interesting note, back home, when I was a little girl, these dogs were called 'perros arroceros' (rice field dwelling dogs) because they used them to hunt the rats that commonly live in the rice fields.

We certainly should because Lord knows what we call 'animals' are better beings than humans...

They do give me a lot of happiness. "When they are good they are very very good but when they are bad ... .

I was my happiest when my kids were small. The birds take me back to that happy place.
