Backyard breeding

Postby Pajarita » Thu Jun 15, 2017 10:21 am

These are two articles about a woman who had over 500 parrots in cages in her backyard and sold the babies through CL. The neighbors complained about the smell, the flies and the noise which prompted the investigation. The daughter said this was her mother's hobby but, if you ask me, it was nothing but a cash business to her. It also illustrates the terrible life these breeding birds have even when the seller calls him/herself a 'hobbyist' breeder and why buying babies is never recommended.

Update on this case. She now has half the birds but still needs to get rid of 200 more! The article says that all the birds are being cared for - Ha! As if being stuck in a small cage with nothing to do but breed was 'being taken care of' for a parrot!

Clearly who ever was making the assessment of these birds doesn't understand what well cared for means. Unfortunatly people that have little or no experience with exotics don't understand proper care is much , much , more than food and water. Very sad situation ! BW

And, unfortunately, cruelty officers, who are the ones that make the determination if an animal is well cared for or not, know NOTHING about birds because they've all trained in mammals! And, to put the icing on the cake, because all the cruelty laws were written for farm animals, the only consideration is whether they have access to food and water and shelter from the elements so a small rusty cage, dirty water and bowl of raw peanuts is good enough under the law!

They need the cages separated and Fosters to take care of them until they find other room for them.
