Yorkochanie's Flock : Masuk & Yaprak & Baby

Postby Yorkochanie » Mon Jul 05, 2010 8:20 am

Hey! I've just joined from Turkey with my flock of three. My name is Begum and I have been a bird owner for 9 years, but there's always something to learn!

My first birds were canaries. After I had them for three years, they died because of our maid's oversight while I was at school. Then I bought my first budgie Yesil (means green in English) who was six years old as a rescue, and she lived happily with us until the day she died because of old age. Then I got Bulut (means cloud in English) who was ill when I bought, tried to heal him but he was too young and tragically died. After his death, I bought Cicis (means Sweetie in English) and Maymun (means Monkey in English) They were my birds for few years but those years I trained and rehomed 5-6 birds including chicks, a duck and a Lory. After that, I bought Citir (means Crunchy in English) and Cancan (means LoveLove in English- it wasn't my idea :D ) who had a one leg. For three or four years, they were my own birds while I kept training people's birds. One day, one of my dad's friends came to our place and fell in love with them. He asked me to give the birds to his old and ill mother so that she would be happy in her last days. I was miserable about giving my birds, but today I know I made the right decision, because it has been four years since I gave them to the old lady, and she is still alive!

After I gave Citir and Cancan, I bought Yaprak :budgie: (means leaf in English) on 23 July 2006. He really is a superstar, the fastest learner I've ever had and my best friend. He will be soon four years old, I can't believe how fast the time passed by. He was the only bird in my house for three years, so he has become the best company because I spent all my time with only him.

Three years later, I bought my first medium parrot, Silver Moon aka Prince. :gray: His owner was leaving the country and couldn't take Prince with him, so I bought that little cutie. He was cute, loving, adorable and a fast learner. I loved him soooo much that I can't explain. He was the best Timneh someone could ever have. Four months after I got him, he got an illness from somewhere. My theory is my mom may cleaned his cage using a detergent which wasn't bird-safe. This is the only thing I think could happen, we took good care of him.. After five days of fighting with the illness, I lost my baby while sleeping in my arms.. It's nine months since he is gone, but I still miss him so much..

A month after my Prince's death, I saw a sick parrot in a pet shop.. He was surely going to die in couple days, but he was sooo small, sooo cute.. So I had to try to save him.. This is how JoJo joined the family. :gray: He was wild when I bought him, but in two days, he let me pet him, feed him, cuddle him.. He was such a lovebug.. Despite all the treatments I applied, he died in the third day he came to me.. I loved him so much in three days, and I have lost my Prince a month ago so it was such a disaster losing him, but I never regret buying him..

A month after losing JoJo, a little girl stole my heart on 20 January 2010. :budgie: Baby Blue was in a little cage with 30-35 small budgies, but she was the most attractive one  Soo, again, I decided to buy her. She became a cuddly, sweet bird in a few days. She has scaly face now, I don't know where she caught it :? but we're treating her and I'm waiting the day she'll be beautiful again.

A month after buying Baby, while I was walking down the street, I saw the most beautiful Congo ever! :gray: He was in a locksmith's shop (I'm not sure what it is called really, but I mean a man who makes keys and opens the locked doors) in a canary cage. His owner told me that he didn't let him out of the cage for two years. I felt bad about the bird, so I asked his owner if it is for sale. He said that if I promise to take good care of him, I can buy him. So, I bought Maximus aka. Masuk on 20 February 2010. After I took him home, I realized his wings were clipped  I was shocked that he clipped his parrot but never let him go out anyway. He is a talking, hand-tame parrot, but when he goes out of his cage, he acts like a different bird, because everything is so new to him. His wings are growing back these days, so I'm teaching him how to fly. The more he flies, the more he bonds with me. I've never clipped my birds so I find it hard to live with a bird clipped. I love birds flying around the room so his staying on his cage bores me  I'm waiting the day he will become fully-flighted. I can't imagine how much fun we will have!

Hi there,

I'm also in Turkey. I'm an American married to a Turk, and we live in Istanbul.

Your intro was great, and I'm very impressed with your English too! And the photos were adorable. I have met so many African Greys that died young in Turkey--it seems common for them to live only 2-10 years. In America, they generally live 35-55 years.

What's the difference? Diet! In Turkey, everybody (including vets) recommends a 100% sunflower seed diet for parrots. That's the worst thing you can give. I feed a mash diet I learned from the Yahoo group "Feeding Feathers."

Also, it's hard to find a big enough cage here. Even the biggest cage for sale in Turkey is 1/7th of the recommended MINIMUM for an African Grey in America. The AG cages here are too small for an American budgie. :-)

hanks for rescuing so many birds from bad situations.

Sharon in Istanbul :gray:

Yeah, when I saw pictures of your CAG in its cage I was wondering why it was so small but decided not to say anything. Now this explains it.

I'm sorry for not being around for a while. We were on a vacation. :swaying:

Sharon, Nice to meet you! :hatched: I loved the name Clover! Yes! The diet is really important. If only we could find organic pellets here. Shipping from another country, mmm, I will consider about it. I'm feeding my grey only 15-20 sunflowers a day, and lots of fruits & veggies. Nuts for treats.

And cages, there are NO stainless steel cages in Turkey! Not even one cage! I'm using wrought iron cages for all, they say it's the second best medal. I have two cages for my grey, the big one is 82x77x165CM, and the smaller one is the travel cage, 71x62x80CM. These are the biggest ones I could find. An aviary? Don't even think about it! :o

Having maybe two or three avian vets (all of them in Istanbul of course.. :? ) is another biiig problem. These dog-cat vets don't even try to help our sick birds. I've lost my Bulut after a vet's fault. When Prince got ill, I wasn't able to find just one vet to heal him. I called 12 vets, and they all said : "What? Parrots? Mmm, we don't know anything about them, maybe you could call another vet?" I live in Antalya, and -i-don't-know-why- all of the greys here are sick. Maybe not "that" sick, but they're not healthy. I hope maybe in ten or twenty years our country will be better..

Micheal and el-parrot, nice to meet you too! El-parrot, 8 birds :o This is a little bit too many for me

And, suprise!! There's a new addition to our family! His name is Casper, a little, lovely budgie!! :budgie: He is sooo young that he has no wings or a tail

And, new photos of my handsome Yaprak :budgie:

Oh well... three of them are somewhat bigger, the rest is small.. ha ha. But.. the smaller ones are not that young anymore and if I don't have them anymore I sure will keep it with my quaker, sennie and grey. Because.. it is a lot of work for sure.

Lovely photos!! And what a cute new budgie! :budgie:

I love the photos of Yaprak, he looks like he is a king!! You seem to be very kind hearted helping those birds out! I hope you can find better food and housing soon. I am in Canada and take it for granted we have all plus avian vets at our disposal...

Good luck

hi begum,

my name is pinar. i'm in the usa. i grew up here most of my life but i was born in turkey. we went back to turkey to visit my familly just this summer. it amazes me how many wild-caught birds are still around outside of the united states! we visited a zoo in a smaller city and it saddened me how many birds just looked ill, probably from overcrowding. you're right, sharon, no one there seems to know much about how to properly care for birds. on the other hand, my relatives own two budgies, papataya (daisy) and fistik (pistachio). they feed their birds seeds and purslane (semiz otu) and other fruits/veggies. when i mention purslane, people here in the states have no idea what i'm talking about. apparently here it's considered a weed and ignored. i heard purslane is super nutritious, enough so that i actually brought back purslane seeds with me to plant my own pot of it to feed to our senegal.

my fiancé and i are in the process of adopting a "rescue" senegal named peewee. when he first came to us, he kept falling off his perch and i insisted on taking him to a vet. they found a yeast/bacteria infection. he's getting better. but it's still a struggle to get him to eat his vegetables! birds are something else!

all the best,
pinar
