New addition

Postby miajag » Sat Jul 10, 2010 3:23 pm

As I mentioned a while back, I took care of my friend's two peach-faced lovebirds while she was away for a few months. I wasn't that successful in taming them, but I was able to get them to a point where they don't totally panic when a hand gets close to them and they'll step up once they're outside of their cage, which I guess isn't too bad considering they'd barely been touched at all in the last year. Winnie seemed to enjoy their company as well, and would have frequent "conversations" with them between their respective cages. My friend got back from Afghanistan, thankfully in one piece, this week, so the lovebirds are back with her.

Anyway, that experience, along with reading other forums and watching Youtube videos of hand-tame lovebirds, parrotlets and budgies (including Duke), got me interested in getting a small hand-tame parrot.

After doing a fair amount of research and inquiring with various pet stores and breeders in my area I settled on a hand-fed, just-weaned-a-week-ago budgerigar from M&D Bird Farm (http://www.mdbirdfarm.com/), a very good bird specialty store in southern Delaware. I went up this morning to check out the budgies (there were 4 remaining from the same clutch, I think a couple had been sold already). All four were fairly friendly, but one noticeably more so than the rest. Totally fine with being held, will step up from finger to finger, and would fly to my shoulder or head instead of taking off and circling around the room a few times (all were fully flighted). So that's the one I ended up getting.

Say hello to...er...he/she doesn't have a name yet. Any suggestions? I'm leaning toward referring to it as a "he" for now, -- I didn't get it DNA'd and it's too young to tell by the cere.

He seems to be settling in fairly well. Just nommed a bunch of millet and is now sitting on his perch chirping happily (or calling out for his brothers/sisters, hard to tell really :? ). I'm really looking forward to starting some target and recall training once he's had a few days to get settled and comfortable.

Congrats! If s/he's hand-reared s/he should be lovely... :budgie:

No unisex names you like? Fruit names (i.e. Mango), literature names (ie. from Shakespeare, etc.)?

My daughter's budgies (thought they were both male, but turned out they were both hens) are called Trouble and Echo...

If you can make a clear picture of its cere without flash I might be able to tell you. The flash kinda took all the colour out of it on this one. The way I look at it now it looks like a girl.
Maybe you can even see it yourself. Young males (usually) have an even dark purple blue cere. Young females often have an icy blueish cere with noticably white rings around the nostrals.

On names, my old budgie was called Koos ( the oo pronounced as oa in goal).
Kika: Senegal Parrot.
Guus: Cockatiel, Yellowcheek, cinnamon, pearl, pied.

Well going by that it's probably female since the cere appears to be mostly pink with the area around the nostrils a bit whiter.

One of my friends suggested the name Sprite, which I like, and has the advantage of being unisex. Unless I think of something better, I'll probably go with that :budgie:

I like Sprite too! And what an adorable budgie. I decided that if I ever get another bird, it will probably be a budgie too. Congratulations and keep us updated on his/her progress! :)
