Out of the cat's mouth...

Postby JadeW » Wed Aug 18, 2010 12:43 am

And under a pasta strainer? :S I have to admit that was not the story I expected to hear when I went into work the other day!

Seems that one of my coworkers happened to rescue a budgie the other day. His cat and another were fighting over this bird he thought was dead, but after getting it away from the cats it jumps up in his hand, certainly not dead! It's kind of hilarious how he never thought he'd ever get a bird and is becoming rapidly attached to this little one. While he was at work he sent a friend out to buy Freebird (the budgie's new name) a cage and some food, but until then it lived under a pasta strainer so the cat couldn't get at it

Yeah... Not sure how often people find random parrots, but I find this one a pretty impressive tale of coming home~ :budgie:

just make sure you ask him to post some posters around it might of been someones pet that has escaped, if mine escaped and someone found it i would love to have it back :) always worth looking a bit before committing yourself to keeping a found bird, on the post just put budgie found describe colours so i know he/shes yours :) so you don get random people

Tell him to check it for wounds too. I heard cat saliva is toxic to birds.
It would be horrible if the little dude turned the corner after such a heroic rescue.

I'm giving him my vet's card, so hopefully she'll be able to give him a better idea of what to do about the cat bite. He did make it sound like there wasn't a scratch on the little guy, so I'm hoping he's not ill effected by the bite. The vet may even know if anyone is missing a budgie, and he's taken pics so there will hopefully be posters soon. Even if no one comes to claim him, Freebird should have a pretty good life with this guy :)

wow, I heard the opposite happen once. Somebody left the cockatiel cage open at my friends house and their dog picked the poor bird up in its mouth and took him outside. The bird managed to fly away, never to be seen again (I wonder if the animals actually had a pact going on to free him...). But now that I think about it I did find my cockatiel in the park close by and kept her a few years before I met this friend, who knows? It might have actually been hers all along... I'll have to ask for a picture. glad to know that the budgie lived! freebird is one lucky bird

It's not toxic as in poisonous, but does have a high bacteria content (as do human mouths -- ours are even worse). Wounds can readily become infected so caution is appropriate.
