How to not clip your bird

Postby Kim S » Thu Aug 26, 2010 5:12 am

Just wanted to show you some pictures of Kika's wings. I had noticed before how badly he was clipped but he wasnt comfortably yet to have me hold out his wings long enough for me to take a picture. But now that he has settled in well in our menagerie, I could take some pictures for you.
As you can see, it was a very crude job they did. Even though senegals are known to fall out of the sky like a brick once clipped, Kika is almost clipped down to the wing itself. If you look closely at the close up of the wing you can see they didnt only cut the primary feathers, but also the primary coverts (second row of feathers). My friend and I already speculated they wanted to make it a permanent job but didnt know how to do so.

On the upside, Kika started to lose some larger feathers. Mainly the covertfeathers. So I am hoping he will have his wings fully grown back by the end of this year!

Poor little guy. I'm so glad he's with a good family now that knows how to take care of him!

Scotty has a pretty extreme clip on him right now. We will probably maintain him as a clipped bird, but not so that he drops like a rock... We aim for a soft glide to landing, but no appreciable lift.

Were the ends cut so jagged or has he been chewing them?

He doesnt chew them as far as I can see. It looks like they cut each feather seperately and nicked the other feathers with the tip of the scissor.

That is an awful clip! Poor bird. Why on earth would you clip the primary coverts? That just doesn't make any sense!

I may be wrong, but isn't pinioning the only way to permanently ground a bird?
