I'm glad it turned out okay.

I do have one question though... is she sure that the parents aren't hysterical looking for their pet bird? I would not be surprised if an 8 year old boy took his mothers bird outside when she wasn't looking and set it free. It could be that she is in agony thinking the bird flew away!

Or, it could be that she just doesn't care and bought an inappropriate pet for a small child.

Robin actually did mention that she asked them when we talked on the phone. The dad said it was his son's bird, and he could do what he wanted with it and it was "probably better outside anyway". The whole story struck me as being extremely bizarre. It sounds so ridiculous to think someone would do that! I don't think they're right in the head.

I was just thinking that this is the weirdest freaking story ever. Has anyone ever heard of someone letting their bird go because they just don't want it? This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard!!! I am pretty mad about it. At least the bird is happy now, but still, how ridiculous. That poor little lovie is probably so confused right now.

I am tempted to find out where they live and have a good talk with that kid's dad. Maybe I will take Galileo with me and let her bite him...

Just kidding. But I am mad.

My previous vet told me he used to have an African Grey and his cleaning woman "pitied" the animal and decided to "set it free" when he wasn't home. They never managed to find the bird so it probably just died on its own.

I would sue her for animal abuse and have her incarcerated for that. Wow.

I'm happy that there's a happy ending!

Different people have different ideas of what constitutes proper animal welfare or husbandry.

For example, we crate our dogs. We always have. But I don't know how many people I've talked to who won't because they consider it cruel. Meanwhile, I know many people who've given away their dog because it ate the couch one night.

And even though we're on an acerage, our dogs aren't left outside lose to fend for themselves. If they're out, they're with us. Most of our neighbours have single outside dogs. I find it disconcerting to have a dog staring through the door, wishing he could be in with his pack rather than sitting outside by himself...

But in the big picture there is more than one 'right' way of doing something too...so as long as the animal seems reasonably content and not in distress I don't question.

I would never 'free' any domesticated animal though...I know the odds of them surviving are nil, but some people do think this is fine...not sure why. It's akin to taking them out of their comfortable urban environment and setting them 'free' out in the wilds somewhere...
