Setback, Galileo. Galileo, setback. Friends.

Postby Azure Hanyo » Mon Sep 06, 2010 10:40 pm

Yeah Galileo and I hit a snag today during training. I got her out like normal during my daughters' nap-time, and she was happy. Come evening, when the girls were in bed, I got her out again as usual and tried some trick training. My husband was nearby, which isn't routine but he watches every now and then. Well, I had Galileo step up to him and she was OK with it, so I decided to let her spend a little time with him while I cleaned her food-dish and water-dish.

When I returned my husband had placed Galileo on top of her cage, telling me she had nipped at him when he had tried to pet her. Well I went to get her to step up and...she bit the crap out of me. She was PISSED OFF for some reason, I am guessing she has started to really dislike my husband? I don't know. But I tried to get her to step up again, and she nipped at me a few times and would not budge, though did not go for an actual bite again. I had my husband leave the room, and only then would Galileo step up for me, and then she all but demanded a head-scratch.

We REALLY need to work on her social skills. :(

Hope it works out sooner rather than later!

How old is she again?

Pekoe (Pi) is 5...and the last few months he's become a bit cage aggressive...and a wee bit nippier. I'm still okay with him...but he did nip me when I went to change something in his cage too...he never used to do that. But he's starting to really dislike my 15-year old son.

I'm thinking it's just sexual maturity. Others say the Pis are mature at around 2...but I'm starting to think it's later than that...(from what others have said too).

She is a little over 5 1/2 years old. She has been very grumpy just in general the past couple of days. I agree, I think she is either sexually maturing or preparing to molt. She is just sooooo grouchy! She lets me pet her and everything, but after a little while she gets nippy. I just want her to chill and be happy. (Well...chill as much as possible for a caique...lol.)

I'm having some similar issues with Scooter, who is not yet 2, but a GCC. Not sure if it is the presence of Scotty, the fact that he has a head full of pinfeathers, or his age. I feel as if I'm re-teaching some of the boundaries previously taught. As much as one tries not to anthropomorphize or blame, a tiny piece of me feels a bit hurt, you know?

YES very much so. It makes me sad when she bites me now, we were getting close and she was starting to really enjoy head-scratches and generally hanging out and now it seems we are slowly returning to the grumpy, bitey bird I first brought home and worked so hard to bond with. I know it's just a phase but I want my happy birdie back!!!! I am wondering if she is jealous of Cloud??? He has cut into our afternoon time together because I have to squeeze attention in for him now too. :? My poor Gal. She is so needy, I swear she must think she's a cockatoo.

Well, a molt can make them terrible grumpy butts! The pin feathers everywhere are uncomfortable. That's probably what is happening with Scooter at least. Is Galileo also molting?

The jealously is also highly possible because you both just got new birds. So, before you give a treat to the new birds, give a treat to the old one. Same with attention... and pay more attention than usual to the old one as well to help avoid jealousy issues. Maybe some special privileges or something?

I have been trying that with Scooter. He's still the only one that gets to come and make breakfast with me. But the whole quarantine thing makes it a bit harder... once I get Scotty out, I can't go back to Scooter without prep. It will be easier when we are done with that! I do notice Scooter is more himself when not in the same room with Scotty (we have an air gap, but couldn't totally quarantine in a separate room, so both cages are in the office.)

Great suggestions! I will give that a go. I *think* Gal is molting, she does have quite a few pin feathers and has a new fascination with bathing (she literally took her first bath EVER today; she normally hates water, though I offer her a basin for bathing every other day, and today she hopped right in and had a blast!) so that could be it with a combination of new-fid jealousy. Thank you!!!

Scooter is an even better than usual bather, too! Hopefully both Gal and Scooter will be feeling themselves soon! (Hope I haven't over-hijacked Gal's thread).

No, no... I am used to it... :violin:

Hahahaha just kidding, there must be a connection between bathing more and molting! :D

Here's to our babies getting back to their normal selves!!!!
