Grumpy feather-butt update

Postby entrancedbymyGCC » Wed Sep 08, 2010 1:52 pm

So the only disheartening thing Scooter did this morning was initially not want to come out of his cage. He started doing that with Bill a week or two ago -- running away and ducking in and out of his tent rather than coming out onto the perch and stepping up and coming out. So I didn't force the issue and let him decide when he wanted to come out. Once he did, he was sweet as pie. Is this the terrible twos?

Dunno. Kili's been like that lately too. She nips me and doesn't want to come out. She's molting and I've been over feeding her. I'm not really pushing the issue till her wings get better.

Can't really speak for GCC's specifically, but I do know that both Lucy and Jessie definitely have moodier periods of time where they are both nippy and really just want to be left alone. Jessie loves his cuddles, but there are days that he just hides in the corner of his cage and won't come out for me ... I generally leave him be on those days. Sometimes he's fine later in the day, other times it lasts for a few days.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing by not forcing him to come out ... its always best when its their decision. Hopefully this is just a short term thing.

Could it be a result of Scotty joining the flock? I recall when we brought Jessie home (I don't have the greatest recollection because that was over 4 years ago) but Lucy did regress and become very quiet for a few weeks. I guess I'll see how they do when I bring Kylie home next month.

hmm, rainbow refuses to step up onto my finger when she's on top of her cage but if I hold it there and don't chase her around then she'll eventually come back over and step up. Thats mostly because for a while when I picked her up off the cage it would be to put her away. Now I reward her and avoid putting her away when she's up there... she's getting better at being consistent! Inside her cage she runs over to be picked up for attention immediately so I have no idea why scooter didn't want to come out :? good luck with the little guy! I'm hoping the "terrible twos" aren't so terrible...

He always has run right up and jumped out, so I don't know what confluence of events has his knickers in a knot... hopefully he'll settle down again and be his usual cheerful self. He seems not so bad compared to Gal, so I'm hoping it's a passing phase.

Yeah Gal usually is very excited to come out of her cage. Earlier today she wanted absolutely NOTHING to do with me... And went so far as to try to lunge for a bite. But I tried again just now and she came out and wanted some scritches. :) I hope this molting thing goes quick!!! Overall she IS a tempermental birdie, but I figure the more time I spend with her, the better she will get and the happier she will be with me. It was working until a couple days ago when she went into nippy-and-bitey mode. CURSE YOU CHANGE OF SEASONS!

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAH YES! SHE IS A LEGEND!!!!!

She is such a sweet bird, I just know it. She just needs time and love. Her sweetness comes through every so often, and it's awesome. I don't blame her when she gets grumpy. I would be twice as mean as her if I'd been stuck in cage most of my life! But honestly I really don't think she's "mean". I think she just needs to know she is with me to stay, and things will get better. She really is a very awesome little bird and has come a long way in a few short months.

:danicing: (Anyone else notice that this is spelled "danicing"? I giggle a little every time I see it...)

OK, Scooter is almost back to normal, still a little funny about coming out, like he wants to be SURE he has a choice. OR that it is safe, or something. But here he is enjoying his birdie lounge chair, and he's also back to throwing stuff off my desk and wanting me to pick it up.

How's Gal?
