A sign of trust

Postby lzver » Mon Sep 13, 2010 11:32 am

Yesterday I was taking Jessie out of his cage for his nightly cuddle time on the couch while watching TV. When I opened the cage door he climbed down to the front opening and was hanging upside down. I provided my finger for him to step onto, because he somehow manages to still step up onto my finger when he's hanging upside down - I always place one hand under him, so if he does miss and fall, I can catch him. Well last night, instead of stepping up onto my finger, he just let himself fall backwards into my hand and the little monkey started laughing. So there he is laying on his back in my hand with his feet in the air laughing.

I'm certain being on their back is a very vulnerable position, so it amazed me that he trusts me that much. He doesn't forget stuff, so I imagine it won't be the last time he does it, especially if he thought it was fun.

I don't think Senegals find it particularly vulnerable cause they love going on their backs. Watch out though, I know my Senegal gets really rambunctious and playfully bitey when she goes on her back a lot.

I wish my caique would flip onto her back, I know caiques are supposed to be goofy and playful... Sigh. Someday!!!

Don't know how I missed this before, but it's great news! Congrats on the progress :)

While it's true they like being on their backs, laying on their backs in the palm of someone's hand does require trust.

While Shade does not have any issue doing this with people she trust, someone who she doesn't know doesn't really stand a chance. She'll lie on her back in my hand in front of strangers but won't do it with them.

Oh and most Poicephalus do have a liking of being on their backs (the small ones anyways)...but again, they need trust to do it in people's hand. Couldn't do it with Joey when I first got him and after working with him and getting to that point..wow. Felt great.
