Disney's first trick

Postby Munchy » Sun Oct 17, 2010 8:35 pm

Here is Disney touching the spoon, although I realize that I ask him to touch the spoon way to much. Should you just give one command while training?
Here is his first poorly made video on you tube.

I just love this little bird.

Aww. That's a really cute name and a gorgeous parrot! Just have one question that I'm sure Disney is wondering about too. Why a spoon?

When I was a little kid our parents had an older man friend who had parrots. The man had one that knew a few tricks and one of them was to flip the spoon. That was my original goal, but I couldn't figure out how to get him to flip it. So I figured touching it would do.

I think once he's touching it, you could encourage him to play with it. You might even put something interesting underneath the bowl. If he reaches under it, or lifts the edge a little give a voice command and bridge and reward. Then give the voice command and if he lifts it a little, bridge and reward. Then when he has that down, only reward if he lifts it a little higher. Eventually he'll flip it over, then you only reward for that. At least that's how I'd approach it. The only thing I wonder about is how to avoid the bird being startled when the spoon finally flips, thus cancelling out the reward...
