Penny & Joy

Postby Elaihr » Tue Oct 14, 2014 6:15 am

Hi everyone!

We've now had Joy since the beginning of September, and everything's been going more than fine. She's completely parent raised and wasn't tamed when we got her, but she's already stepping up like she's never done anything else in her life, and since a week back she dares land on me when called. She's an incredibly brave and smart little lady! The relation between us humans and her is getting better and better each day.

We also found out, after having had her for a week or so, that Penny is in fact Joy's aunt (I called their respective breeders to find out if they were related). Couldn't have guessed, they're quite different from each other personality wise! As Joy is so young she might change when she goes through puberty, but that's one thing only time will tell.

Regarding the relation between the birds, it too seems to be going well. I'm still Penny's favourite person so I assume hey haven't bonded to each other, but they're not fighting or anything either. They preen each other occassionally and play together with no fuss, so I think it looks promising :) No big jealousy signs from Penny either, she seems to appreciate her new bird friend and has become more energetic and playful since Joy arrived (they were separated at first as I wanted to make sure they were both healthy, but as soon as Joy came through our door Penny seemed to notice that something was different).

I've posted pictures of Penny before, but here's one of both her and Joy, on one of their play-trees. A jackdaw just flew by so they're staring at the window looking a bit puzzled, but I think they're adorable anyway :)

Can't see the pix, it appears as a little box with an x in it. Glad to hear that they are getting along, it's wonderful for a pet parrot to have a bird companion... it adds immeasurable richness to their lives! Thank you so much for doing Penny such a great service!

This is Milo (blue) & Morgan (white). They are clutch borthers from the 30th and 31st of August this year. Both were handled at the breeder's, but ofcourse they had to acclimate themselves when they arrived here at our apartment. Currently they are both willing to perch on a finger while eating millet, either alone or together. Things are moving pretty quickly, considered they only just arrived on saturday. They are such brave birds. :)

p.s.: I'm unsure but does anyone know if Morgan is a recessive pied?

Semantic;
Since you have said that Morgan is the one with so much white, my opinion is that with 3 colors showing in the picture of them that Morgan is a pied and that if they are brothers then it is much more likely that Milo is a recessive pied. Normally in a recessive you do not see the recessive coloration although the gene is present. This is all just my opinion.

Thanks Wolf and that actually makes a lot of sense. The only reason I thought Morgan might have been one, is based on a photo guide of the different varieties. I find genetics somewhat difficult to sometimes understand, though very interesting. If it helps, their mother seems (according to the breeder) to be a sky blue, and their father is a yellowface blue with a couple of white feathers on the neck. Milo seems to be your standard white faced blue budgie (colour wise) but with a slightly warmer hue to the blue. Morgan is as you can see, mostly white with a bit of blue from the middle of his chset and down to his vent. A bit of the black markings, and then he actually has some slight yellow (which isn't showing in the picture) on either his alula feathers or the primary coverts. It's just ever so slightly yellow, it almost looks like a dirty white.
