Some of these are beautiful, but still very freaky. The last picture labeled as a Senegal really freaks me out. It looks like it could be a senegal, but the color freaks me out.

I have a friend who breeds the Blue YNs, Butter/Cream Red lored and the brown/ Red Blue Fronts, you really need to see the Blue YNs in person as a pic dosen't do them justice, I'm in the process of working a deal to start breeding the Blue mutation Yellow Napes, just need to save a little more money LOL, there is also a Yellow mutation Orange Wing Amazon very beautiful but alas an OWA is still an OWA and the same is true for the Blue Front and the Red Lored however the Blue mutation Yellow Napes are larger than normal and better talkers than even normal Yellow Napes, All of the Blue YNs came out of 2 nest in the wild and the only original non-related pair belong to my friend , he of course has bred birds to normals and has Split to blue birds now that throw blue mutations, you should check out his web site and read some of his lectures and papers, probably knows more about Amazons than any one in the world, Dr. Howard Voren, voren.com

I just don't like the idea of mutations .... to see a Senegal that has totally different colors just doesn't seem right to me as an example.

The mutation is a natural occurrence... it's breeding them to perpetuate it that is manipulated. On the other hand, in many species mutations are often dominant, such that ultimately the entire species ends up with the trait that was once a mutation... that is, in fact, how evolution works. But we do have a penchant for perpetuating via human intervention anything that's "different".

I wonder what physiology drives these color mutations? They often seem to be suppressing or enhancing the yellow or the red component. The patterns seem less affected than the color expression, although the yellow Senegal lacks the markings as well.

The best reason to be against hybrids and "fancy mutations" is because they perpetuate a lot of unhealthy inbreeding which leads to many other problems.

How many of the hybrids are fertile? It's a real concern with mutations, unless they are very dominant traits so you can outcross normally, but I thought hybrids were one-offs? Of course the mating for life thing IS a problem there, when one of the parents is a rare species that should be breeding true if the species is to survive.
