My Plucked Chicken

Postby Dodger » Mon Nov 29, 2010 8:38 pm

Gort is my 25 year old Orange Winged Amazon.

Gort was a rescue. I received him through a rescue here in Alaska. And before coming to his fosters, Gort was hand-raised by an older man who had him for 17 years. After the man's passing, Gort went to the man's daughter who didnt like him and kept him covered in a garage for the next 7 years of his life. When she finally turned him over to the rescue, over 4 inches of feces was incrusted on his cage, he was completely bald except for his tail feathers, feathers on his legs and head. He was also very antisocial, didnt want to be handled at all and I was told he bit and would draw blood. I was told he was very loud and continued to pluck whatever feathers he had left.
Upon adopting him, he isnt loud and only "squaks" when he wants food... Human food. He's a little butterball :) He has never bitten me, he is a very cuddly, affectionate little guy and loves to walk around the house like a dog. He doesnt care to fly but will every once in awhile. If I ignore him, he will sit on the bottom of his cage and cry but gets very excited and starts "talking" immediately when I say hello.
He also doesnt talk. He has his own way of talking and communicating.

Gort saying "Hello".

Awww... Gort is beautiful!

Its amazing how much neglect they are able to endure. Just goes to show what some attention and love does for an animal. I'm so happy to hear that Gort has a second chance at enjoying life.

He's definitely beautiful. I'm glad he found you and is happy with you! It's so sad when a loving environment changes like that and they're thrown into a situation they don't deserve to be in. I'm so happy he's with you now! :D

He definitely has made my life so much more brighter!
Even from the very beginning when he was bald I thought he was GORGEOUS... I have a thing for "naked" animals. I love Sphynx cats, American and Mexican Hairless dogs and Chinese Cresteds. Not entirely sure why. But when I saw Gort, I didnt care if he got his feathers back or not. He would even let me put sweaters on him! He doesnt so much now that he's got his feathers but he still lets me put a flight suit on him. Not that he needs it :)

He looks kinda like a fat little butterball in these pics. :) And he LOVES to have his picture taken... As if you couldnt tell from the top "posing" picture.

Now that's a story that makes your blood boil. How could anyone throw an animal in a garage for SEVEN YEARS? He must be a real survivor to have withstood that and still have any joie de vivre. Kudos to you for giving him a shot at getting his mojo (and feathers) back.

Did he come with the name "Gort" or is that your doing? I think I'd be saying "Klatu barada nikto" all the time....

lol yeah he came with the name Gort. He wont allow you to change it. But it grows on ya after awhile and really fits him. I googled the name when I first got him and got one result... The Day The Earth Stood Still (the 1951 version). It fits him well though because he doesnt talk. But he comes to his name when called, responds to it, etc.

He's a very incredible little boy. He has a VERY bubbly, excited personality. Truely a survivor of what was a horrible incident. And for him to go through all that he did for that long... It's amazing he's still the way he is <3

What a sad story, I couldn't imagine how hard it must have been for him to be locked away for so long :( I'm so happy that Gort has a happy forever home and lots of love for the rest of his life

Some of the stories in here are good enough for a reality show on Animal Planet. Great job on Gort.
