Jazz update (6 weeks)

Postby sidech » Fri Feb 11, 2011 1:42 pm

Jazz has been with me six weeks today, so I thought I'd give a little update on how he's doing.

We have made great progress bonding, I can pet him just about anywhere now without getting bit, at least 70% of the time. He loves kisses and cuddling. Loves to be on my shoulder, but is on training for that, as he will nibble my glasses, my neck and cheeks a little too much for my taste. So most of the time he's out of there after about 10 minutes. This week, I was surprised to find out he let me put him on his back twice, for a good 45 seconds. It happened by accident when I took him off my shoulder, I didn't even realize I turned him upside down, and there he was, on his back, and happy to receive his usual kisses.

Eclectus's diet is demanding, but I've pretty much gotten into a routine, and things are a lot easier now. He has nice colors and a pretty orange beak, so I guess I most be doing something right...

He was clipped when I got him, but I don't think I'll clip him again. He is able to fly on short distances, maybe 10-12 feet, and land correctly if not too high. He loves playing with his toys on top of his cage, and is very content just having fun up there, even hiding in his basket.

Toilet training is going great. He won't necessarily poop where I want him to (in his cage), but he poops on command 75% of the time, which is great. I'm hoping with time he will only do it in his cage or on a stand.

We are having a bit of difficult time because of his screaming. He still lets out his baby cries, and will do it sometimes constantly, other times only when he sees me. Sometimes really loud. I've had other Eclectus owners tell me this behavior stops when they are about 7 months old, so I can't wait !

Here's a few pictures of him, and a video (last) :

Hi
Nice job! I am a little concerned with that twine in your pics. It has the potential to become a noose and Jazz may get caught...check it out

Thanks for your concern. That thing is just a small thread hanging on the bars. Even if he wanted to, he couldn't get caught in it !

so cool! not the species for me but I do love eclectus, they're absolutely stunning. What is Jazz's diet like? I don't know much about eclectus- just the basics
anyways, I'm glad things are working out! it looks like jazz has a great home :eclectus:

Thanks zazanomore ! You wouldn't believe how good he smells... Depending on what he eats, he will smell like strawberry, kiwi, blueberries... And he's really soft too. I just love him to bits !

Tonight I bought him a talking phone, the ones made very young kids, so it's bird proof. He loved to hear the different songs and looking at the light up display.

Thanks Giantmoa !

His diet is 80% fresh fruits and vegetables, some cooked brown rice, quinoa, millet and others, a bit of seeds (I make my own mix) and about 5-8 pellets per day. His pellets must have no vitamins added, no artificial flavour, no coloring. He can't eat anything "unnatural ", because they tend to suffer from toe tapping and wing flipping if you give them anything with chemicals or even vitamins. They have a very long digestive track, and need a lot of vitamin A foods. He can have some of what I eat, such as cooked pasta, cooked chicken, boiled eggs very occasionally, fish and so on.

They need a lot more than just filling up the bowl with pellets and seeds, but nowadays, a lot of parrot owners are giving fresh diets to their birds, not just Ekkie owners.
