Bird Whisperer?

Postby Saerphe » Mon Mar 28, 2011 8:32 pm

I went to visit the PetSmart today with my friend... I wanted to show her the Senegal parrot that apparently took a liking to me. A couple days ago I went in to look at the birds and caught it staring at me... then it tried to preen my fingers. Needless to say I melted, but I wasn't sure it'd repeat the behaviour after I left.

Anyway, I went back in today and wouldn't you know it, the little thing patters right up to the side of the cage closest to me and lowers it's head to ask for scratches. I would have happily complied, except that the front of the cage is glass, heheh. The green cheeked conure next to it immediately tries to do the same, except that it's food dish is in the way. So in one cage, you've got this Senegal that's half asleep at this point and in the other, the conure's trying to push past it's food bowl. It was quite comical really...

I haven't interacted with the birds beyond that. I go in because I like to look and watch them play, but I've never handled them, or really spoken to them where they could hear me. This isn't the first time something like this has happened either.

When I was about 11 or 12, my parents took my brother and I to the Syracuse Sports Show... we own a campground, so we have to go to sport shows to advertise and such... lucky me, at this one there were bird and animal shows. There was a predatory bird show for trained hawks and you could get your picture with one after... there was also a barred owl. Anytime anyone tried to get a picture with it, it wouldn't sit still; it always tried to fly away. But when I tried to get my photo with it, it sat quietly and never stopped staring at me. They had a hard time getting it to look at the camera. Their keeper was quite surprised and let me be her 'assistant' in the next show. :D

I also pretty much always have success handfeeding the chickadees in the backyard... but I've also had them land on me or come very close to landing on me when I didn't have food. Chickadees are awfully bold though.

I dunno what it is... some (but not all) birds just seem to like me. Thought it was a cute story I'd share. :)

I'd like to consider myself an animal whisperer, but the truth is, I've never actually encountered a truly aggressive animal :P

Awwwwwwwww.... for me, i've been bitten by a chihuahua, had a sennie maul my pinky, a patagonian conure attacked me, scratched by budgies and more dogs, nearly was destroyed by a macaw, chased by a yorkie, had a cat look at me evilly, got the stink eye from a CAG, slapped by a fish, and was attacked by another chihuahua. I think it is safe to say i don't have that touch  i did not even DO anything, i just appeared in the same room and got the destroy treatment

My mother calls me an animal savier....Animals that are in need seem to find me....Ive gone to a deserted rest stop and found abandoned bengal kittens...ive found a kitten in my front yard...ive gone to visit my husband at work and found a puppy underneath a truck...ive found baby kittens behind a dumpster...theres so many more examples..but also when i go into the bird store ALL of the birds want my attention (macaws, cockatoos, amazons, etc) Ill have the amazons whistleing at me and the macaws screaming at me,and the cockatoos doing some weird little dance thing at me all while raising one leg to get me to pick them up. Ive had birds fly off there perch to get my attention. And once there on my shoulder...they wont come off lol...i have to ask my husband to help...
