a tale of two senegals...

Postby bassrox75 » Sat Apr 30, 2011 7:46 am

hello everyone...its been a while since ive joined but ive realized that i have posted far less than i have read so i figured its time for an update. zazu and martha are doing exceptionally well...considering their state when we took them in at the beginning of february. as you may remember reading they were kept in a rusty old cage together in a BARN for a few years. zazu had torn martha's face up pretty good and she had a large wound that has since healed. she even has all of her feathers back on her fluffy little cheeks...and two of them are yellow against the grey hehe...sooo cute.
also-thanks to those who gave advice about getting separate cages to prevent zazu from doing that to her again-we found a great deal on two really nice cages in the local online classifieds. they match, they're the perfect size and the guy who sold them to us just wanted them out of his house (he no longer owned birds) ...so he gave them to us for a hundred bucks :D
i cant believe how much better zazu behaves now that he has experienced his fair share of time outs. i can honestly say its been a good couple of weeks at least since hes bitten me really hard. now its almost a warning nip instead of a bite. my fingers are loving this! he knows that if he bites its cage time for him until it doesnt hurt anymore :P
zazu also picked his favorite person almost immediatly upon his arrival in our home-and its "Not Me" unless "My Favorite Person" isnt home. the second my boyfriend walks through the door hes dancing for atttention and cat calling and whistling like mad. im going to say this has a lot to do with the bird being raised by a guy and the fact that my boyfriend is definatly a bird person. if it wasnt for him i would never have had a feathery friend. wouldnt have even thought of it. not because i dont like birds (dont get me wrong..i like animals) but i had no idea the level of intelligence they behold. WOW
martha is the SWEETEST, most quiet, biggest, and most fearless (except of zazu..) of the two. she has one "word" and its "woooooo"...very quietly. if shes even in the mood to make any noise. another one i hear out of her is just like a cricket and that is usually just here and there when shes out and about when we're home. she grinds her beak a lot which has gotten the term in my house "crunchy beak" and still gives me weird goosebumps when i hear it. like nails on a chalkboard just less offensive to the ears lol.

both the man and i work nights for the most part and our usual morning starts at 2pm so when we get up the curtains are opened to shed some light and the coffee is made and we start our day. so when it comes time to hop in the shower zazu now goes into his cage and martha is left out because while we shower its pretty much a guarantee he will climb allllll the way down his cage...allll the way up her cage to make her jump and flap-flop her way to the floor. then he follows suit and chases her allllll the way into our bedroom. with no where else to go. so far ive found her under the comforter and blankets on a made bed and another time wedged in between the nightstand and the wall on the floor because hes chased her all over hell. so he gets out to eat breakfast and goes back in for 20 minutes while i get ready for work.

anywhos..if you have actually spent the time to read this whole thing-thanks! hope to hear any thoughts back on all of this. i am really enjoying my new friends and some of the crazy funny stuff they do. if someone can tell me how to resize a picture for this i promise to post one! i tried earlier and couldnt get it figured out before i lost interest or got distracted. have a good day everyone! :senegal: :senegal:

I love happy stories.

I have one suggestion. Maybe you shouldn't have both birds out at the same time. And when you do have one out, make sure you are monitoring them around each others cages.

Besides that, I think you are doing a fantastic job. I'm so glad their wounds and feathers have healed.

oh no worries there...if im going to be out of the room for more than a few minutes one goes back in so i dont have to worry about any fights. learned that one within the first week :)
still even when we are in the room we're constantly picking zazu off her cage. hes like a fireman sliding down his cage legs!
