Update on Kokomo(lovebird)

Postby Julsiebean » Sun May 15, 2011 9:05 am

Just wanted to gush about my progress with the adult/untame lovie I took in a few weeks ago. April 29th to be exact! The day of the royal wedding, her full name is Kokomo Kate in honor of the event haha! Anyhow, she is a HOOT! She plays and swings all day and fills the house with sweet chatter. She doesn't step up and won't let me preen her, but she allows me to pick her out of the cage with little protest and loves to sit on my head/shoulder, or snuggle as deep into my shirt as I let her go. She can be really nippy, sassy, and bossy but hey, she is cute! So the rule is, unless I have millet- no fingers haha.

She just preened me for several minutes, a first for us. So very special! She is now puffed up on my shoulder grinding her beak. So much love!!!

I can't believe our progress, I've just done everything in her terms. Yay!!!

I'm so torn between getting a black masked lovebird or an albino cockatiel as my next bird. And you guys really don't make the choice much easier!

I'm at the same crossroads! I have always had a cockatiel, and now that both are mine are gone I swear the house just isn't the same. I miss the cheeping, chirping, whistles, and calling. My Piccolo was such a HUGE personality and Clementine was SOOO sweet. I am looking for a final (for a long while) bird to round out my flock and have ruled out a parrotlet, Kokomo is PLENTY sassy and playful and fiesty. Juniper is just a great bird all around, quakers are such well rounded birds, they offer so much. So, my final two choices are either a cockatiel or a green cheek conure. My husband says "no cockatiel!" haha, Piccolo drove him crazy. I also admit my oldest sons allergies seem to have improved since the tiels aren't around. Something to consider, I mean not that he was crazy allergic (I wouldn't keep something he was allergic to), but there has been a difference. Anyways, I'm not sure it was the cockatiels or not. I adore conure antics and conures in general, the good, bad, and ugly and I think the green cheek fits our household best.

I was trying to decide between a cockatiel and a green cheek about two months ago before I got Cheney Bird. I ultimately got him because I fell in love with his tiny little face and how cute he is. Though, he's being a brat today and I find that much less than cute. I'm thinking of shoving him in the shower for a bath so he calms down and hangs out in his cage for a while!

The next time I add to my flock will probably be when I'm living with my boyfriend, so I guess what he wants will end up factoring in to the decision. He's driving me bonkers today too, so I may just get the bird and forget the boyfriend. :D His nephew has six cockatiels and I don't think my boyfriend is much of a fan, but I think they're adorable. But so are lovebirds. I'd probably get both at the same time if I thought I could properly pay attention to two babies and two flighty budgies and a bratty conure and an annoying boyfriend! But I don't think I can, so I'll have to pick one.

I have an offer to go to an aviary this week that has baby quakers, baby tiels, and baby green cheeks. I feel so selfish paying for a baby when I'm sure I could adopt/take in a rehome like I always have. Something about a baby that is all mine is too hard to resist. Who knows what I will end up with!

So hey, how "clingy" is your GCC?

I wouldn't say he's clingy, but he does like to cuddle. If I let him, he'd be on me all the time but he's perfectly happy playing with his toys or the budgies. The only time he really demands to be cuddled is bed time. He refuses to sleep otherwise and will break out of his cage and keep coming over to me until we cuddle, lol.

I leave the cage doors open all day so he's free to come and go as he pleases. Mostly he plays on top of the cage or with the bells on the play gym. He'll fly to me if he really wants to be pet or play with the keyboard, but that's not an every day or even every week occurance. He does have to know where I am all the time, though. He "pss pss pss" like he's calling a cat and I do it back. After that, he goes right back to playing.

I would totally get a GCC. They're too cute to pass up!

Okay that sounds managable! Very sweet. Awww. Want. On the volume scale, where would you place your GCC?

Now that we're out of his hormonal period, he very rarely makes a peep. He doesn't even do the morning and evening calls. This week, I don't even think he's made his loud call once. That said, he's not as loud as other conures. His call isn't deafening, but it is louder than the budgies or a cockatiel. Based on the frequency though, he's much quieter than the budgies.

His hormonal period was awful. It made me want to hang myself or something. His call got much louder and shriller. And he kept going and going. It lasted about 3 weeks before he calmed down. But if you can deal with a Quaker, you can deal with a GCC.

Well what I worry about is a GCC going at is AND a quaker! I wouldn't mind, but I'd love to not hear my husband bitch. He is prefectly happy with what we have now, but I tell you that screaming jenday we fostered emotionally scarred him. Anytime I mention a new bird his eyes glaze over and fear sets in!! Seriously will trade my husband for a good parrot.

I'd rather have a thousand birds than my boyfriend sometimes, and right about now is one of those times. My boyfriend drives me crazier than my birds ever do.

I'm not sure how adding a GCC to a Quaker would affect noise levels. I've never even seen a Quaker in person, they're illegal here. Vicki has both so maybe PM her and ask.

I say buy him a pair of earplugs or an ipod and tell him not to worry about it. :D
