Einstein Versus the Vet

Postby zazanomore » Tue Jun 07, 2011 7:26 pm

So today me and Einstein had an appointment at our local clinic for his nails to be trimmed. (I don't feel comfortable enough to do it myself).

Thankfully, getting him into the carrier wasn't very difficult. I turned off all the lights, so it was nice and dark, and carefully placed him in it without too much of a fuss.

He was being such a sweet little gentleman on the way there, politely chirping to me. In the Vet's office he walked nicely out of the carrier, and jumped on my shoulder. He didn't start flying around like a crazy bird which I expected.

But, he does not like his nails clipped. I tried holding him for the vet, but he was being way too squirmy. I tried and tried, but eventually he bit me (he has never bitten me before, and it drew a bit of blood).

So the vet had to call in another vet, and we toweled him, and eventually, after a lot of toe moving on his part, we got all his precious talons clipped.

As soon as we got home, Einstein started cuddling, and being extra love-y. Absolutely no resentment.

the vet sounds like a good idea to me now...i was trimming my sun conure tonight and cut to short drawing blood...i had to stand him in corn starch for an hour to get it to stop...glad he is a co-operative bird...next time the vet for sure...it scared the daylights out of me and i felt so bad

I just use a nail file to rub of the sharp ends of their nails.

I am in Kansas and have had several vets groom my birds. They always freak out and cause such a fuss. Last time I got them groomed it was at a bird store (the parrot house). The guy their was absolutely fearless with my birds they loved him and he groomed them without stressing them at all. I told him about my vet experience and he said he has groomed thousands of birds and is not nervous and they sense that. I don't know if most bird stores are like this one but I will go see him from now on. My amazon hates men but he just reached right in and my bird went to bite him and he said no step up and my bird jumped right on his hand. He was more natural than anyone but me with my birds and charged me a forth of what the vet charges. He also filed my caiques beak and it has never looked so normal. His beak grows very crooked. You might want to c if your local bird stores are similar.
