Bird intelligence

Postby snakesentwined » Tue Aug 02, 2011 12:54 am

Isis has learnt a new trick. Well - by learnt I mean worked it out for herself.

Geoff starting tying a short string onto some of her foot toys to fix them to her window perch (partly to stop her simply throwing them down for the exhausting game of 'pick-up' ;) ) - and noticed that she very quickly learnt to pull the string to get the toy. He then tried with a much longer string and one of her favourite treats: it took her about 10 minutes to work out how to pull the string, stand on the bit she pulled, then pull the free-hanging string again.

We've now tried with a really long piece of string - and posted the video to YouTube. Amazingly, this time she even worked out that she could hold the loop in one foot - which made the whole process of getting the treat even quicker and easier. Such a clever girl :D

Some birds aren't meant to be caged, their feathers are just too bright...

People take bird intelligence for granted. They could be smart as our own children, they just need a teacher that speaks their language
