Confusing behaviour??

Postby Dannynoscar » Sat Nov 05, 2011 8:11 pm

Im sorry, im not sure if this is the right place to post this! Two weeks ago i bought an Alexandrine for the first time. He's now 10 weeks old, and he has a funny behaviour that i cant quite work out. Whenever he can see me, he continously bobs his head and squawks at me. Its obsessive, he does it non stop while ever he can see me or while im holding him. He wont take food, gets louder if i talk to him, but stops when im out of the room. Its like he's expecting me to do something, but im not sure what! Lol. Its getting quite frustrating, cos im not sure what to do. Has anyone had this experience?

Is he fully weaned? Sounds to me like he's begging for baby food.

No, im still feeding him twice a day, and i thought that but he wont take it from me, just keeps up the bobbing squawking until im out of sight. If i put it in a bowl, he'll eat it on his own, but he doesnt stop the confusing behaviour even straight after a feed. Lol. I have tried offering him food from my hand continuously, but eventually he gets frustrated with me and nips me, so i stop. He's not afraid of my hands, actually will come to me to be picked up, steps up and now down easily, and i can pat him on the beak but not anywhere else, he's not a fan. I just keep gently pushing him, he's a reallu sweet bird otherwise :)

If he is that young- you took him from his family which he played with and snuggled with. He was never alone. You have to play and snuggle. His actions are to get your attention for comfort.

That was my other thought, so i have been carting him around with me everywhere (much to Birds disgust :irn: ) talking to him as i do stuff. The constant squawking doesnt stop. Is it just a matter of time? How should i play with him? He hasnt touched any toys, at least not that ive seen, but if im in the room he doesnt do anything aside from bob and squawk. I got bird at 8 weeks too, but we never experienced this. Thankyou so much for helping :)

The Alexandrine parrot cries like that around that age. When I hand fed one It seemed to me like something was wrong. Eventually another breeder I talked to explained that it was normal and will go away around that time in which he starts eating on his own.

I don't really know any other parrot who cries this obsessively. Some of them like the cockatiels cry a lot when they're hungry and can cry for a good few minutes after been fed. The baby Alexandrines seem to do that, at that age, all the time so long as you're around, doesn't matter if he's hungry or not.

Wow, thank you so much! Ive started to notice that hes eatingnless of the hand rearing formula. I no longer feed it to him, he eats it from the bowl, but he's lucky to get through 2 teaspoons. Im hoping he finishes soon!! :D

Hi Danny,
We just got a new baby :irn: and he is doing quite the same thing. However he is 15weeks old (my vet think he is younger than 15 weeks old). My Idian ringneck has never been a vocal a part from about 10 loud chirps in the morning after breakfast. Just wonder how are yiu doing with your baby Alex. Any updates or exp you can help me?

Thanks Danny,.ash

Have you served gloop yet. It is easy to eat the food when it has been softened.
