A friend of mine, might be the best one

Postby Pepi » Fri Dec 16, 2011 3:45 pm

Please don`t feed your friends with peanuts, don`t even think about it!
Peanuts kill! After being together more than 36 years with my friend, he
died all of a sudden with Aspergillosis.

Cordial regards,

I am very sorry for your loss =(.

I hope your message gets through on these boards, peanuts can be dangerous. From what I know, the danger is in the shells though right (where the fungus can grow), not the actual peanut?

yes, please find out and answer. Is it in the shells where the fungus can grow, which can hurt the birds? And not the actual peanut itself?

I so empathize with your loss. You must be heartbroken, my friend. Thank you so much for helping to get this message across.

You said your bird passed "all of sudden". Had you been feeding him peanuts before through the years and he had been fine? Or will peanuts cause a "sudden" death? Or "over time"?

Because I have fed my bird peanuts before, a few times, and he's been fine.

If I could just hug you. I'm sure you could use lots and lots of hugs, due to the Lord taking your beloved feathered friend to heaven.

Love Maria

I would assume that not all peanuts have the fungus. I don't feed my birds peanuts so I haven't done much research on whether or not it's just the shell or if peanuts without shells are fine. My thinking on the subject is it's like anything, you can feed them peanuts for years and suddenly that batch has the fungus and the bird passes away. Just like you can eat spinach your entire life and suddenly you pass away from salmonella. The reality is, you never know if the food you are consuming or your bird is consuming is contaminated, so if they're known to be prone to a certain toxin, it's best to just not feed it to them. Simply my thoughts on the subject.

My condolences for your loss. None of our pets have ever lived with us that long (they're all cats/dogs/horses, etc) so I can't imagine how lonely you must be.

For anyone who wanted to know more about peanuts and the toxic fungus on them, here's an article I just happened to read yesterday:
