Update on Parrot Rescue

Postby paper_lantern » Mon Dec 19, 2011 5:05 pm

If you haven't read my previous post on this same forum please do so!

I went back to the pet shop, and when I saw the conditions had not improved I spoke to the owner about giving me the birds. At first he said no, but when I told him I was going to get the SPCA involved her let them go. I'm picking them up tomorrow and we are driving straight to the vets (3 hour ride). Then they are staying with me until I can bring them to the parrot sanctuary in my state (a 7 hour ride).

They are not hand tame, but they look so sweet and scared. I hope nothing is seriously wrong with them when I bring them to the vets. Probably just some malnutrition I'm guessing.

I'll post pictures and another update as soon as they are settled in!

Any tips on how to switch them from an all seed diet to a pelleted one?

They may not be tame but as soon as they realize that you will feed them good food, keep them clean and be nice to them - they will love you.

GOOD JOB.

Go slow for the seed to pellet switch. I've tried this a couple times and will only type what has worked for me. It took me a few tries to get my gcc switched.

1. Use a seeded mix WITHOUT sunflowers for awhile.
2. Mix in a more and more colored pellets over time (I know that colored is not the goal but it makes the transition easier). I tried for a week at each ratio of pellet/seed: 10/90, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25. I stopped at 75/25.
3. Continue to use colored pellets but add noncolored using the ratio formula.

I had an issue with Phoenix not wanting the plain pellets so I bought myself treats that were the same color: animal crackers, wheat thins, triskits, etc... and kept them near bird cookies of the same color. When we would play I would eat from 'his' pile and eventually he started eating the plain ones.

I hope this helps.
