My new parrot Ozzy

Postby lisalisa100 » Mon Jan 02, 2012 12:51 pm

I am so happy!! We brought Ozzy home 2 days ago (New Year's Eve). He is a 7 year old African Grey whose previous owners had no time for him. I don't think he has been out of his cage for years so feels safe there and won't come out. Anyway, he takes food through the cage from your hand no problem but I thought it would take weeks if not months before I could scratch his head and neck. Today, he let me do it loads of times. He is also a prolific talker. We are hearing more and more as the hours pass. Today he said "sing us a song" then proceeded to whistle a totally tuneless song for ages!!! Bless him. He must know he is very loved and will be spoilt rotten here!!

Great! Glad to see he is warming up to you all and he is settling in, I think he's gonna turn out to be a great companion, now that he knows he will be loved.

Take great care of him (I'm sure you will  )

Thank you for your kind words. Tonight he has been going mad talking, whistling and beeping. Hopefully one day he will come out of his cage. The door is open all day but he is too scared. Apparently he says "cover me up, bed time" when he wants to go to sleep but I haven't heard him say that yet!!!

Well, would you believe it? As soon as I say he is too scared to come out, he comes out!! He came out of his cage, climbed to the top, walked around then flew off and crash landed on the floor (didn't hurt himself). He then walked around on the floor looking a bit bewildered. Eventually, I had to get him back in the cage and he wouldn't step up on me or a perch so I gently got him with both hands and put him back in his cage. He did bite me but only because he was scared and only as a last resort. Give him a few weeks and I think he will be alright with coming out and going back in on his own. Rome wasn't built in a day!!!! So, so pleased with him. Just as I was putting him back in the cage, the phone went and it was the previous owners ringing to see how he was doing!! He was really happy that he has settled in with us and that he is not scared here.

So good to hear.

He crashed because he hasn't used his muscles enough. He will do better next time.

We have a result!!! He came out of his cage tonight on his own and had about 2 hours on top and climbing around his cage. I managed to give him head and face scratches for ages and then when he had had enough, he climbed back in his cage for food !!! He is brilliant. When he is tired he says "cover me up, time for bed" so I cover him up and say "night night". He then says "give us a kiss" (and makes sound of a kiss) and then says "see you in the mornin'" He never shuts up talking. Another one is "sing us a song then" and then he goes "la la la " or whistles. He even told us to "turn the tele over" and then "chop chop mrs". I love him to bits

Wonderful - I am so happy. You two are going to be such good friends. Even now you probably don't know how you survived without him.

Keep us informed - we want to know more.
