Do other birds look like yours?

Postby Kenny » Fri Jan 06, 2012 5:42 pm

I have a Senegal and marvel at how, when I see pics of other Senegals, they look exactly like mine.
I realize this is not rational since I know Senegal is a breed that has little variation of individual appearance.
It should not surprise me that other Senegals look just like mine . . . but it does, and it freaks me out.

Am I alone?

1) Senegal Parrot is a species and not a breed
2) There are actually 3 distinct subspecies of Poicephalus Senegalus that look different enough to spot
3) They do look so much alike! I wonder how long it would take me to tell Kili apart from a bunch of other Senegals if they got all mixed together. Especially from a distance and without behavior, they are practically impossible to tell apart!
4) Ask Mona how she does it. She has 3 in the same house!

Michael, thanks for the clarification on breed vs. species.

BTW, I have admired you.
Your posts are frank, to the point, but always helpful, non-emotional and intelligent.
I've also admired your behavior with your birds in the videos.
A bird is the best measurement of its human.

Over the years I've noticed some people are just natural "bird-people" and you are a good example. :swaying:
Now that I have read some of how you think I can only say, "Kudos".

BTW, great avatar.

I have two Meyer's and can tell them apart rather easily.
I've met a number of other Meyer's as well, and at one point had a few of them together, including mine, and I could still tell you which was which.

Mind you, it can maybe be easier since the yellow patters vary from one individual to another.

Male Red-bellieds looks all very similar - but I can tell you which one Joey is if close enough to see individuals clearly. I could probably do the same with Shade, my Senegal. Again, I've met a number of Senegals and while very similar, there's always been something to set my guys apart. Might have come out of living with them for a few years now.

I think I have the easy way out, here, as I have a yellow-sided GCC and a Sun conure, both of which have rather individual markings. So, yes, I can tell the difference. And I always feel that mine are cuter :P

I can tell Echo apart from others because he has a little spot of orange from his belly up in his green on his chest. Plus his head has a greener tint than I've seen in other Senegals

I can tell Ladu apart from other tiels because his head is a much less vibrant yellow than other tiels.

I have often wondered this myself I have a black cap caique and always thought it would be cool to find someone else with a caique for him to play with but thought "What if I can't tell who is who?" I figure like normal he would probably come to me when I called him. The pictures I have seen really seem to be that they are all identical.
